In fact, a lot of our orders lately have had multiple decoration locations." These days, almost no part of an outer- wear garment is off limits for decoration. Designs can be placed vertically down the chest or along a sleeve, on back yokes or side seams, across the lower back at the hem, offset above a shoulder seam, or on pocket flaps or hoods. Kissing zippers even allow for printing across the entire chest. Many buyers are also asking for things like custom zipper pulls or labels to make the garment a truly branded piece. The goal with outerwear decoration today is to create something custom to the brand it represents or for the end user who will wear it. "People want to make their jacket very unique," Jackson says. "They want to make it their own." And, as with almost anything, the trends in medium and placement often vary by region and type of user. For instance, Nickerson says, mono- gramming in the south is a huge trend and rainwear is very popular. Fishermen prefer hooded jackets while skaters like collared versions, Rambo says. Similarly, auto rac- ers load their garments with decorations while surfers stick to minimal designs. Traditional industries like banking tend to prefer simple upper left-chest embellish- ments, Silcock says, while younger folks in the technology sector often want some- thing unique, like laser etching or emboss- ing on the hood or sleeve. The message, manufacturers say, is to show your customers a variety of methods and placement options so they can get ex- actly what they want. "I think people are always looking for something that's a little different," Nicker- son says. "When you get a customer who is open to something different, that's when it gets fun."
