58 • RV PRO • August 2017 rv-pro.com F usion Entertainment has come a long way from its birth as a New Zealand-based car audio manufac- turing company. Although founder Sir Peter Maire originally expanded Fusion's offerings into marine entertainment, about six years ago he and now Managing Director Chris Baird decided to go into the RV entertainment market, as well. Three years ago, the company was acquired by Garmin Ltd., and Baird says the combination has proven to be a winner for both sides. Buyers of Fusion Entertainment components get products designed specifically for the RV market, while being backed up by Garmin's man- ufacturing and supply chains, warranties and support. Baird knows a bit about GPS systems. He originally went to work for Maire as he was developing the Navman GPS technology, which Maire later sold to the Lake Forest, Ill.-based marine man- ufacturer Brunswick Corp. At that point, the two men went their separate ways, and Maire decided because he liked music that he wanted to get involved in another company focused on car stereos, which became Fusion Entertainment. "About 13 years ago, he decided he wanted to turn that into a marine entertainment business, so he pulled me in and set me up to run Australia for Fusion," Baird says. "At that point, we decided that there was no one doing marine entertainment properly, so we designed and engineered products from the ground up, rather than taking what were car products and selling them to the marine industry." Baird believes that approach has made Fusion one of the leading marine enter- tainment companies in the world. Nor did it seem like a far reach to expand into the RV market. "Again, we came into the market with a different look," he says. "We're not coming in as a car audio company again, and we're not coming in as a marine A Fusion of Styles With backing from Garmin, Fusion Entertainment has access to strong R&D as well as factories around the world.
