Last Wednesday around 180 people attended a cer- emony attended by local politicians, military, veter- ans and local residents and volunteers came together to honour the men who died while building the canal. Col. John By, had two companies of the Royal Sappers and Miners raised in England and brought to Canada in the spring of 1829. The 7th Company along with 250 labourers were sent to the Isthmus. The men were part of a 56 man company which came to Newboro in 1829 to build the cut between the Upper Rideau and Newboro Lake. Through research in England over the past two years, the names and infor- mation of these 13 men has been uncovered by volunteers of Royal Sap- pers and Miners Cemetery Restoration Committee. The Last Post Fund designed and had erected a monument engraved with details and all of their names of the group which died far from home likely from blasting accidents or the malaria that plagued the site that year. A monument donated by The Last Post Society honors 13 British soldiers who were buried in a cemetery outside of Newboro and died during their work to build the Rideau Canal. Father McNally, Rev. Ward and Padre Long offered prayers at a cere- mony at the cemetery attended by around 180 people last Wednesday. Above, Joan Wright of Newboro lays a wreath.
