From DJing in his bedroom to headlining the Glade stage at Glastonbury in 2010, Nick Douwa, or better known as Sub Focus has become one the most well known names in the drum & bass scene. Described as a "forward-thinking creator", Douwa has gained a seal of approval from legends like: Grooverider, Mistajam and Annie Mac. And as Douwa gets ready for the release of his next album, the DJ lets us know about the messiest festival he's been to, and what it was like playing at the last Secret Garden Party. 2017 / ISSUE 101 DRUM & BASS 39 So where are you in the world today? I am actually in the studio today, I have got a couple of days off from touring this week so I am just catching up on a bunch of tracks and I am working on a bunch of stuff for my live show at the mo- ment. I know you where at Ibiza a couple of weeks ago, weren't you? Yeah, I was their this week as well actually. I have been doing resi- dency at Amnesia for Together. Is Ibiza one of your favorite places? Yeah, it's really good, I used to go to like Techno House nights on the Island quite a bit. I remember going to Ibiza and thinking the top music was at Amnesia so it's really cool to see the night 'Together' be- come one of more popular nights on the Island. So it's been a really wicked experience. It's a place that I have always wanted to play at. So you have been travelling all over the place, we saw you at Paradiso as well, how was that? That was amazing, it's up there with my favorite US festivals. It was an amazing session, you are behind this gorgeous huge valley in this kind of amazing setting. I love those kind of natural settings, they are my favourite. It's just nice to play outside with nature, I really enjoy that. You've done quite a lot obviously, you have been at some of the biggest festivals in the world. Like Secret Garden Party, Tomorrow- land, Bestival and you have got SW4 that you are working on at the moment. So what's been you messiest festival? I remember at Glastonbury last year, I did this like mad sesh play- ing like till 2:30 in the morning, and Michael Eavis, the guy who runs it, his like 80 years old now, stayed up till 2:30 in the morning to watch that. So it was pretty amazing, we gave him a shout out and the crowd saluted. I also went to the last Secret Garden Party and that was really cool, we did some good sets for the send off. When you go to festivals with your mates, who is your main entourage, who do you roll with these days? Just a few people that I normally end up going to festivals with, I was actually with these guys at the last Secret Garden Party, James, his a big producer friend of mine and Dan, we were sort of all together for that. So when you are not creating mu- sic what do you like to do? I have got into photography re- cently, I do that quite a lot. I have been getting into trying to do something on film, so I have been doing that quite a bit, and it's all self taught. I have been getting really nerdy on that recently and when you are touring loads it's nice to go back home and do boring stuff. So what have you got coming up? I have got a new album coming out and a new club track will also be coming out in a couple of weeks. It's nice to do something for the club as well, I try and keep a bal- ance with the stuff I put out. Like some more sort of local type of songs, and then I like to have really more underground.
