SEPTEMBER 2017 THE WOLVERINE 5   FROM OUR READERS Long, who was a top-100 recruit, can become a legit No. 1 cor- nerback for this team, the secondary instantly becomes legit. There would be so much competition at the No. 2 spot and the nickel spot, everything else would fall in line. 2. Redshirt freshman DL Michael Dwumfour — Dwumfor be- comes very important as the only non-true freshman who can be a player on the inside and provide great depth and possibly even go 50/50 with redshirt junior Bryan Mone. 3. Sophomore viper Khaleke Hudson — Viper is such a fun spot in Don Brown's defense. There's potential for Brown to be able to use Hudson in so many different ways. Honorable mention — Aubrey Solomon, a five-star defensive tackle. Michigan is going to need that depth! oceloter • Wouldn't it be great if Michigan could hold a preseason scrimmage in the middle of August? I've got a feeling college football teams will be allowed a preseason scrimmage in the not-too-distant future. With the extra week of fall practice, it makes more sense than ever before. I know coaches would support the idea; I think the kids would love it and I know the fans would be ecstatic. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping I live long enough to see the rule change become a reality. Tick, Tock. Nevershank • I think that will happen. Already does happen in basketball. I've long wished the spring game could be against another team. mgobluea • Eh, I would worry about injury. Not sure why you would be excited about that? Now a sanctioned passing league would be cool against other schools (no pads) but other than that, I'm definitely okay the way it is now. louis_beck • Wow, that would be crazy. I was at Hillsdale College and we played Central Michigan (freshman team), which was quite an experience. I can only imagine scrimmaging with Michigan. I guess it would be better than a practice, but the talent level is so dramatically different. We had two guys that could walk on at Michigan, maybe. I would think they would want similar talent levels if this idea ever came to fruition. bluestrom • Serious injuries can happen and do happen in practice, es- pecially training camp, almost every year. The starters wouldn't be likely to play the entire scrimmage either. They'd probably get a few series to put on tape and then it would be about evaluating your depth. College football is the only sport that I know of that doesn't have some sort of preseason competition. The NFL plays four exhibition games and they have much smaller rosters. Fear of injuries just isn't a rational excuse, in my opinion, for college football being behind every other sport. Exhibition games are a great idea and should happen sooner rather than later. Wolverine224 • The first ESPN College Football Power Rankings are out … OSU No. 3, PSU No. 6 (LOL), Wisconsin No. 9, U-M No. 13, Florida No. 14. Michigan4Life19 • Wisconsin is always solid but No. 9? I don't see it. PSU is a joke but not surprised. Let's see if they can make it to our matchup without getting exposed. 3rd&biakabutuka • I don't get all the hate on this board for Penn State being highly ranked. I don't by any means have any admiration for PSU as an institution, however their football team this season will be solid. They have a Heisman candidate at RB and a very good running back backup. They have an above-average quar- terback and a very good tight end. While the defense will not be exceptional, they have some solid pieces. I am not sure how good their offensive line will be, but overall PSU is deserving of a top-10 preseason ranking. U-M will have its hands full in Happy Valley. txgoblue • The consensus is that Wisconsin has an easy schedule this year, which leads to ranking them higher, and when they keep winning they stay high (it's circular logic at its finest). However, I don't think their schedule is as easy as others do. Sure, the middle is coast territory but games 3-5 are tough. At BYU, home to Northwestern then at Nebraska is a tough stretch, even with a bye in there. If they get through that at 5-0, they'll be 10-0 when we visit and probably ranked in the top five (I think they start off conference play at 0-2). peebs3 • I'm not dismissive of the Gators, nor overly worried, but I question the timing of these gigantic season openers; I hope this is the last time for a long while we go into one of these with obvious issues. Opening against Alabama was a painfully forgettable experi- ence. We're opening at Jerry World with the nation's youngest team this time. Can't wait until we do one of these grand openers with a com- pletely loaded roster and millions can see a powerful Michigan in week one on that national stage. Kind of a rant … need more coffee, maybe. Go Blue. Always. Blue_note • Clearly the game that will be drawing the most attention on opening day is Alabama and FSU, but this will certainly rank a close second and should open some pundits' eyes to the direction of Michigan football. We need to drop the ham- mer on them and set the tone for the rest of the season. Being undefeated heading into Penn State is key. It is most likely that both teams are undefeated at 6-0 and would most likely be a top-10 matchup in prime time. Pull an upset in Happy Valley and the season is well on its way to greatness. cmfenner • I am looking forward to the Florida game (as I always do). I think our defensive line is going to be very, very good and their quarterback will struggle in his first game with all of the pressure. Although young, I am excited to see our wide receivers. I am also looking forward to an offensive line with- out all the familiar names that just never got the job done. Finally, running back De'Veon Smith played hard, but I am looking forward to a full menu of Chris Evans and Co. I like our chances in this game. sandiegogoblue
