SEPTEMBER 2017 THE WOLVERINE 55   MICHIGAN FOOTBALL trained yourself up to that point." • Two young linemen vying for playing time have impressed in the spring and since. Redshirt freshman guard Stephen Spanellis is the team's top student-ath- lete, and redshirt sophomore Jon Runyan Jr. could start at right tackle. "[Spanellis] is really reshaping his body, coming around … going from year one to year two, he did some really good things in the spring," Harbaugh said. "[Ru- nyan] is probably our most athletic line- man when you look at testing, things like that. He's had some bad luck … gets an injury at the wrong time. Last year he hurt his shoulder diving into the Huron River. "We've had none of those shooting our- selves in the foot [moments] this summer." • Harbaugh is hopeful redshirt junior Drake Harris can provide some competi- tion at cornerback, after moving from receiver. "He's been doing a lot of it in the sum- mer with a lot of other players," Harbaugh said. "So I'll be really interested to see when … he really starts to get the full, hands-on coaching. We didn't know for sure — and still don't — but the thought hit the brain, and we talked to Drake about it and asked, 'What do you think?' He asked, 'Why do you think that?' I said, 'You're long, you're athletic and you're a smooth runner.' "That's what NFL teams are looking for, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 corners, and he's got that. He's got that by birth. He's growing into it. It might be an opportunity." • Harbaugh noted sophomore end Rashan Gary and fifth-year senior tackle Maurice Hurst Jr. have handled the added media attention and expectations well. Both have been included among media countdowns of the top players in college football, and Hurst was recently dubbed the No. 1 draft-eligible defensive tackle for the upcoming NFL Draft by ESPN's Todd McShay. "It's been overdue," the coach said of Hurst. "He's enjoying that people are appreciating what he does as a player, brings to the team ... even on our own team. It drives him to be even better. He's had that license and ability to be really great. We appreciate the heck out of him. He's got a chance to be really good. "Rashan was a top recruit coming out of high school with a lot of hype and adula- tion. Some people live for that approval, recognized as a hyped-up player. Then other players see that hype and go by it like it's an orange cone on the side of the road. They aspire for greater things than the adulation. Rashan is that type of guy." • Pep Hamilton was hired from the Cleveland Browns after last season when passing game coordinator Jedd Fisch departed for UCLA, and he's been a hit. Offensive coordinator Tim Drevno said it didn't take the new assistant head coach and passing game coordinator long to make an impact. "When Pep walks in the room, he's just a wealth of knowledge," Drevno said. "He demands from those guys, understands different scenarios and answers to the problems in matchups. He coaches those kids just like his own sons or daughters — he's very loving, caring and passionate. You can judge a person's heart 10 feet away, and you can tell when they have a good heart. Pep has a golden heart, and he's unbelievable." ❏ OFFENSE Pos. No. Name Ht. Wt. Cl. WR 88 Grant Perry 6-0 184 Jr. 1 Kekoa Crawford 6-2 195 So.
