Ponies and horses were also put to work on Monday at the fair for the event's annual horse draw, a time honored tradition for the fair, which unlike many events came away unscathed by the rain which managed to move around the site. 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 43 Bedford St., Westport 613-273-8848 soho@rideau.net Mirror The Review Traffic on the Rideau Canal took a hit in July when high water levels closed lock stations and locked traffic in the sys- tem for much of the last week of the month. The number of vessels in the system grew over last July by 3.6 per cent but they are still down 1.8 per cent on the season over 2016 as high water plagued the area in May. However, despite the high water troubles, the stretch of canal between Jones Falls and Poona- malie actually saw traffic increase over July 2016. Much of that 3.6 per cent growth came in the southern sector where at the Narrows 2767 boats locked through in July compared to 2174 last year. The Narrows is up over 12 per cent on the year, locking through 3625 boats, compared to 3220 to the end of July last year. For July, numbers were also up 20 per cent at Newboro to 2293, up from 1903 in July 2016. They are up 9 per cent on the year. Chaffey's locked through 1509 in July, up from 1461 last year. They are up 2 per cent on the season. Davis Lock's July increase was 1346, com- pared to 1288 last year. They are up 6 per cent on the year. The Manotick Classic Boat Club's annual boat show returns to the West- port harbor this Saturday August 12 from 10:00 to 4:00. The club held it's last show in the village in 2001 and this year marks the 41st edition of the show. "As far as boat owners are concerned, it's a popu- lar spot to bring their boats," said event organiz- er Chris Lucas. The floating docks at the harbor will have around 36 boats with addi- tional boats parked on land around the spring and Fetch Murphy Way lead- ing to the harbor. Boat trailer parking will be at the arena with launching from the foot of Bedford Street and down Cty. Rd 42 at the Forester's Landing launch. Visitors can expect a visit from Pogo, a 36 foot welded aluminum service vessel which accompanied the HMCS Labrador which was Canada's first Arctic patrol vessel to maintain a Canadian pres- ence in the North back in 1954. The boat is now in the care of the Outaouais Branch of the Navy League of Canada, where a dedicated group of vol- unteers has been working at refitting her for active duty in the service of Sea cadets and other youth and community organizations. The pleasures of a boat show for boat owners isn't just interacting with visi- tors to tell the story of their own boat. "A big thing is listening to the stories of the boats they used to have. It's a really nostalgic thing," said Lucas. This year for the first time the club will be hav- ing a youth judging event, an activity which is being sponsored by the Hagerty Classic Boat Insurance. It's a great opportunity for children 6 to 14 to learn more about boats, meet the boat owners and as a youth judge receive a free T-shirt and hat for par- ticipating as a judge. Participants can register with the harbor master, Kevin Kardash at 613- 273-8621, or by email: harbourmaster@village- ofwestport.ca.
