The Chaffey's Lock Heritage Society is hold- ing their Annual General Meeting Saturday, Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Chaffey's Lock Community Hall. The group has responsi- bility for the Lockmaster's House museum and the community hall. The meeting will include reports on the society's activities as well as the group's direction for the new year. A special feature this year is an introduction to a new play by Chaffey's Lock resident Joan Delaney about the story of Fettercairn, a WWI sol- diers' convalescent camp on Indian Lake. She and husband Bob Butcher will be giving a costumed dramatic read- ing of part of the play. Delaney got to know the tale of Fettercairn from Agnes Richardson when creating an exhibition for the Chaffey's Lockmaster Museum. Fettercairn was a place of retreat for shell-shocked soldiers who got rest and recreation on what is now known as Richardson Island. Delaney is looking for a few young men ready and able to bring the play to the stage. The only remnants of the hospital-retreat from a century-ago are a stone fireplace and the remnants of some docks. The match will be tak- ing place on some of the 1,000 acres owned by the Dwyre family which has been farming in Elgin for five generations. The plowing site is in a field at the end of the Earle Dwyre Road, accessible by Hwy 15 south of the Chaffey's Lock Road and north of Elgin. Bill Dwyre took the farm over from his father in the 1970s and now farms with his sons Mike and Mark and their wives Tessa and Alicia. The farm has a long history in the family that began with its purchase by Bill's great-great grandfa- ther, Andrew Dwyre in 1828 and over the years the farm has grown con- siderably. The land is used to grow corn, soy beans, small grains, hay and still includes a sugar bush. The family's true pride is in their 'Hill View' herd of Holstein cows which num- bers 280 head including 96 cows milking. Bill and Nancy started registering Holsteins in 1976 under the prefix Hill View. They earned the Master Breeder title in 2006 and have bred 72 excellent cows. The Dwyres milk their cows twice a day in a tie- stall barn. Many renova- tions have been made on the barns over the years, including a 50 stall addi- tion in 2000 and more recently the addition of tunnel ventilation. Next Saturday the plowing begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. for the multi-class competi- tion which includes mod- ern and vintage tractors as well as horses. Admission is charged to enter the grounds. Mike and Tessa Dwyre's children are look- ing forward to the oppor- tunity to try their hand at plowing on Junior Match Day which takes place at the farm on Friday with some of those competitors choosing to compete again on Saturday. Opening ceremonies on Saturday are at 12 noon and musical entertainment begins at 11 a.m. A can- teen catered by the Port- land UCW will be avail- able on site. Competition on Satur- day will also be had for the queen and princess of the furrow, who to earn their crowns must demonstrate their prowess at plowing as well as making a speech and passing an interview. Plowing competitors learn their placements at the annual plowmen's ban- quet which this year takes place at the Delta Agricul- tural Society's hall. Ban- quet tickets are available by calling Denise 613 342 9432 or Kathi 928 2473.
