44 ■ THE WOLFPACKER WOLFPACK FOOTBALL mocked up movie posters of the group — which, of course, never focus on a singular player, but rather the unit as a whole. The group also spends copious amounts of time together — for football-related activities around the Murphy Center and down time outside of it. The big men are usually one of the last position groups off the practice field, and senior guard Tony Adams credits Ledford and strength and conditioning coach Dantonio Burnette for overhauling the approach within the group. "Band of Brothers is one thing we've al- ways been keying on since Coach Ledford got here," he said. "It's created the type of culture in our room where it's only about the people in the room." Ledford played defensive line at East Carolina from 1995-97 and was even a starter there. But he then switched to the other side of the ball prior to his senior year, which earned him a shot in the NFL as an offensive lineman. He knows first- hand what his players go through and why he stresses the brotherhood so much. "To me, that's what I try to get them to understand — we're special," he said. "Play- ing on an offensive line with those other four guys — that's special now and [so are] those relationships I had with all of those guys. "I want those guys to feel that, and I think that's a way I can get them to identify themselves as being an elite group. … This team needs the B.O.B.s." Following the loss of NC State's first 1,000-yard rusher in 13 years, Matthew Dayes, the Pack needs its Band of Brothers stronger than ever. The coach believes that they are exactly that, thanks to the off-field relationships carrying over between the white lines. It also doesn't hurt that the position re- turns what he considers four and a half starters, after sixth man Terronne Prescod, a redshirt junior, started three games and saw action from scrimmage in all but one 2016 contest. The players understand what the coach's high standard is up front with so many returning veterans. "Everybody is back, we're all real close — the closest I've been to a team ever and I just love them to death," Adams added. "I'm going to be here for my boys. … One thing we understand as a group is it's on us." The transformation from an offensive line to the Band of Brothers is complete, and the first battle is quickly approaching Sept. 2 against South Carolina in Charlotte. Like any army, the Pack will only be as strong as its front line — and the B.O.B.s welcome the challenge of leading the way like an all-you-can-eat buffet. "We want to just win," Adams said. "We've been here for too long to be going through what we've been going through. We want to have that big win, those big couple of wins — double-digit wins, cham- pionship-type wins. "We all have a common goal to win a championship. That's the only thing we've set out eyes on, so everybody is working to get there." Former Walk-Ons Earn Scholarships A pair of NC State walk-on players were surprised by head coach Dave Doeren with scholarships in August. Doeren and the Wolfpack players cel- ebrated the news that both fifth-year senior offensive lineman Peter Daniel and red- shirt junior running back Brady Bodine had earned scholarships for the fall semester. Both players had videos of them learning the news published. It continues the tradi- tion NC State has had with walk-ons be- coming scholarship players. Tight end Clark Eyers, quarterback Josh Taylor, linebacker Ford Howell and current cornerback Nick Lacy also received the honor in recent years. Daniel arrived to the Wolfpack as a 216-pound defensive end. The former Ra- leigh Broughton High product now checks in at 6-6, 305 pounds and is a fixture on special teams while also playing some along the offensive line. Daniel saw action as a blocker against William & Mary, Old Dominion and Vanderbilt, tallying 16 snaps. He has ap- peared in every game the last two years on special teams. Daniel made the Dean's List in the fall of 2016 and he has already earned his degree in agricultural business last May. The 5-10, 200-pound Bodine, who is from Camp Lejeune, N.C., was compli- mented by Doeren for his 3.5 grade-point average in biological sciences. The coach then revealed that the redshirt junior was the answer after he asked every single coach, "Who do you trust the most on spe- cial teams?" Bodine has played on special teams each of the last two years, totaling 20 game ap- pearances so far in his career. Twice, he has seen the field on offense — for seven snaps in the win over Eastern Kentucky in 2015 and in last season's bowl victory over Vanderbilt, when he rushed the ball three times for 14 yards, with a long of 11. — Jacey Zembal ■ Projected 2017 NC State Depth Chart OFFENSE Pos.
