50 ■ THE WOLFPACKER Roman Gabriel (1959-61) Gabriel is the only NC State football player to be a two-time ACC Player of the Year, taking home the honors in 1960 and 1961. He was also named a first-team All-American by the Football Writers and Football News both seasons, and added Time Magazine honors in his senior year of 1961. In his first season as a starter for NCSU, Gabriel led the NCAA in completion percentage (60.4 percent), and he finished his career with a then-school record 2,951 yards passing. He has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Following his NC State playing days, Gabriel was drafted second overall in the 1962 NFL Draft and pro - ceeded to spend 16 years in the league. He won the NFL MVP in 1969 and was a four-time Pro Bowler. Gabriel led the NFL in passing yards in 1969 and 1973, the lat- ter season earned him the honor of being named NFL Comeback Player of the Year. His No. 18 is retired by NC State, who also included him in the first class for the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. 19 Receiver Don Buckey (1972-75) The twin brother of quarterback Dave Buckey, Don was a first-team All-American in 1975 according to the Football Writers and left school with all the school records in receiving at the time after hauling in 102 passes for 1,734 yards and five touchdowns. 20 Cornerback Dewayne Washington (1990-93) Washington was named second-team All-ACC as a senior after intercepting four passes. He became a 12-year veteran in the NFL after being picked at No. 18 in the first round by the Minnesota Vikings, starting 11 seasons and picking off 31 passes. 21 Running back Matthew Dayes (2013-16) Dayes was named second-team All-ACC as a senior after rushing for 1,166 yards. He finished his ca- reer fourth all time at NCSU in rushing yards (2,856) and 100-yard games (13), and third in running scores (34). 22 Receiver Mike Quick (1978-81) Quick remains 12th all time at NC State in ca- reer receptions (116) and sixth in receiving yards (1,934). He became a first-round NFL Draft pick (No. 20 overall) by the Philadelphia Eagles and played nine seasons, making five Pro Bowls. He has been inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame and is currently its radio analyst for football games. 24 Running back Anthony Barbour (1989-92) As a senior, Barbour ran for 1,204 yards to post the third-best single-season rushing total at NC State and was named first-team All-ACC. His 5.43 yards per carry for his career is just behind Ronald Hooks' school record of 5.45 despite rushing 223 more times than Hooks. Barbour is sixth all time in rushing yards at NC State (2,575). 25 Receiver Pat Kenney (1970-72) Kenney was a big-play receiver for the Pack, averaging 18.2 yards per catch, the third-best career mark in school history. He averaged 21.9 yards a recep- tion as a senior, third best in a single season for NCSU, and was named first-team All-ACC. 26 Defensive back Art McMahon (1965-67) McMahon was named All-ACC as a junior and was a co-captain of the 1967 team noted for its famous "White Shoes Defense" that started the year 8-0 and rose to No. 3 in the national poll before losing 14-8 at Penn State. He played four seasons in the NFL, intercepting three passes. 27 Safety Earl Wolff (2009-12) Wolff holds the record for tackles by an NC State defensive back (400) and was first-team All-ACC as a senior. His eight forced fumbles are tied for third most at NC State. He was selected in the fifth round of 2012 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles and spent three years in the league. 23 Running back Ted Brown (1975-78) 18 It remains somewhat remarkable that 40 years later, Brown remains the ACC's all-time leader in rushing yards with 4,602. Brown is also the only player in the league's history to be named first- team All-ACC four times, and he was the ACC Freshman of the Year in 1975. At the conclusion of his college career, Brown ranked fourth all time on the NCAA Division I ca- reer rushing yards list. He still has the most 100-yard rush- ing games (27) and rushing touchdowns (49) in school history. Brown played eight seasons in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings, who drafted him in the first round (No. 16 overall), and he rushed for 1,063 yards in 1981.
