Captain's Choice award went to "Winona" while the People's Choice award was given to 'Thumper'. Harbourmaster Kevin Kardash had all three of his staff on deck on Satur- day and was pleased with the event which helped to create one of the harbour's busiest days ever. The barbecue to benefit the harbour sold out after having a steady stream of customers. Friends of the Rideau volunteer Ken Watson was equally as enthusiastic about the reception their booth got at the event. The group promotes an appreciation for the histo- ry of the canal and oper- ates an information stop and shop at Merrickville. "The crowds came out. We saw a lot of cottagers and people interested in the Rideau. We had a good location. We like talking to people. People ask all sorts of different ques- tions," said Watson. The vehicles involved were a Toyota Rav4 and a motorcycle. Both vehicles were travelling eastbound on Westport Road as they approached the intersec- tion with Devil Lake Road. Air Ambulance trans- ported the female driver of the motorcycle to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Frontenac OPP is con- tinuing with the investiga- tion. Hwy. 15 driver nabbed going 165 km/h Leeds OPP stopped a stunt driver on Hwy. 15 just south of Portland Monday at about 3:10 p.m. The northbound car was driving in excess of 85 kilometres over the speed limit. As a result, a 22-year-old Ajax man found his vehicle towed and impounded for seven days. He is scheduled to appear at Brockville Court Sept. 6. Fatal accident near Stanleyville A 17-year-old male from Drummond North Elmsley Township sus- tained fatal injuries in an accident near Narrows Lock Road and Cty. Rd. 10 early Sunday. Lanark OPP were called at 1:37 a.m. Sunday to the scene where a Mazda passenger car was on an embankment on the north side of the road. Lanark OPP and Tech- nical Traffic Collision Investigators continue to investigate the collision. Copper wire theft Leeds OPP are asking for the public's assistance in the theft of copper wire from a hydro substation over the long weekend. OPP were called to a substation in Front of Yonge Township Aug. 8, where, sometime between August 4-8, thieves cut a hole in the fence and removed three 50' rolls of copper wire. Woman injured in motorcycle accident This Friday and Satur- day plowmen will be descending on Dwyre Farms outside Elgin for the annual Leeds County Plowing Match. The match will be tak- ing place on some of the 1000 acres owned by the Dwyre family at the end of Earle Dwyre Road, off of Hwy. 15. Junior Match Day takes place at the farm on Friday with some of those com- petitors also competing again on Saturday. Saturday the plowing begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 3:30 for the multi-class competition which includes modern and vin- tage tractors as well as horses. Admission is charged to enter the grounds. Opening ceremonies on Saturday are at noon and musical entertainment begins at 11 a.m. A can- teen catered by the Port- land UCW will be avail- able on site. Saturday will also fea- ture the Queen and Princess of the Furrow competition, where partic- ipants earn their titles by demonstrating their prowess at plowing as well as making a speech and passing an interview. Leeds County Plowing Match this weekend The Westport Arts Council are raffling off six hand-painted chairs at MUSICwestport Saturday. These three were adopted by The Cove (with Debbie Doyle), Lake Effects (with Lauren) and Past Time Home Decor. Raffle tickets will be avaialable up until draw time Saturday. Chairs are also on display at Mac's and Cottage Country.
