24 PRESEASON 2017 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED BY LOU SOMOGYI M any might believe that after a 4-8 season in 2016, Notre Dame football is at the crossroads. In many ways it already was going to be with the debut of the massive Campus Crossroads Project for the Sept. 2 opener versus Temple. The largest construction project in the 175-year history of the University of Notre Dame — an approximately $450-million, 800,000-square-foot integration of world-class space for teaching, research, performances, faith, multimedia, student life and athletics — is virtually completed on the football end. The other three main facilities along the exterior won't have full occupancy until the start of the second semester in January. Three-quarters of the space was de- voted to non-athletic purposes, but the football stadium aspects were unveiled to the media during an Aug. 11 tour of the enormous new structure that has the feel of a campus unto itself.
