www.BLUEANDGOLD.com PRESEASON 2017 53 really good football player, and I'm really glad we've got him." ALOHI GILMAN'S STATUS REMAINS UNCERTAIN Notre Dame is petitioning the NCAA in an attempt to get sopho- more Navy transfer Alohi Gilman eligible for the 2017 season. Under NCAA rules, Gilman would need to sit out this season, but the program is hoping a waiver request gets approved, allowing the safety to gain immediate eligibility. The lack of resolution heading into the final two weeks of fall camp has made it difficult for Elko and the Irish staff to fit Gilman — Navy's second-leading tackler last season as a freshman with 76 — into the rota- tion at safety. "It's been hard for him to balance what we've done with him," Elko noted. "I do think he is a kid who can be in the mix if he is able to play. "We've tried to do enough with him that he'll have a chance to do that if we got that route, without overdoing it. If he isn't ready to play then we haven't wasted a ton of reps." ✦ Senior Drue Tranquill is expected to have a breakout season at rover. PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA Strongside End No. Player Ht. Wt.
