GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 28, ISSUE 1 71 since the injury, but Purdue also got a goal from rookie Hannah Melchiorre and solid goaltending from fellow freshman Katie Luce. Purdue had six freshmen start in each of its first two games. Perhaps most telling of Purdue's improvement, it hopes: The Boilermakers beat preseason No. 18 Notre Dame 2-0 in South Bend in an exhibition Aug. 9, the same Irish team that had walloped Purdue 5-0 in the spring, before the freshmen had arrived. In its second exhibition vs. Iowa State Aug. 12, Pur- due rallied to beat the Cyclones 2-1. And afterward, Roff pointed out to his players that the Boilermakers never once scored an equalizer last season, let alone scored an equalizer, then a go-ahead goal. "Whenever we were a goal down, we never came back," Korolas said. "It was great to see that mentally we could stay in the game, focus on scoring a goal, then even having the winning goal, that was a big thing too. In the Big Ten, we'll have to have that, knowing that we can come back." But if the Boilermakers make a big move this sea- son, it'll come as a surprise to many. Even though Purdue had three players on the Big Ten's preseason honors list — Williams, Korolas and Petrina — league coaches picked the Boilermakers to finish 13th, ahead only of Maryland. "We haven't been as successful," Petrina said. "But I think this is the year we will kind of step out of that and actually make our mark on the field. I think we have the right players, the right team, the right mentality, lead- ership, and on the bench with the coaches. We all have the same goals, and I think that will make big things happen this year." j State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company State Farm Indemnity Company Bloomington, IL State Farm County Mutual Insurance Company of Texas Dallas, TX 1606043 Good day, bad day or any day – I'm here for you in all life's moments, backed by the #1* insurance company for auto, home and life.
