Most plants require significant amounts—turfgrass being relatively high in demand and covering approximately 1.9 percent of the United States. Although water is problematic in the arid western USA, droughts are common in nearly every region, and drought water restrictions focus primarily on turfgrass. Water is important and should be conserved and managed properly regardless of whether a drought is occurring or not. Managers need functional and aesthetic turfgrass surfaces under any condition, which is especially difficult during unforgiving summers.
