It didn't take them long to figure that one out," said Hutchings. His dad was always willing to try something or get the attention of politi- cians including sending maple syrup to Diefenbak- er or writing a letter to the Minister of Transport in 1948 to replace the swing bridge at Jones Falls. Some people would remember Hutchings carved maple leaf pins. "He was a proud Cana- dian and he loved the maple leaf but hated the one on the flag. "He carved all his life. He always had something on the go," he said . Sam Hutchings lived to be 101 and was in excel- lent health until the two weeks before his death. "His mind was sharp right up to the end.
