62 THE SHOP OCTOBER 2017 here's no doubt that vehicle wraps have taken the automo- tive customizing world by storm. From the local florist advertising on a Sprinter van to the neighborhood millionaire wrapping a Lamborghini in color-changing vinyl, the wraps market continues to find new ways to make vehicles look great. For restyling shops considering getting into the graphics game, there are three distinct skills needed to take a wrap job from concept to finished product: create an eye-catching image that looks good on a vehicle; print it out cleanly using the proper equip- ment and materials; and install it flawlessly. HP helps with the second step by offering a line of shop printers specifically designed for the vehicle wraps and graphics markets. The company's HP Latex 300 Series and HP Latex 500 Series printers are popular because they are designed to produce instant-dry, anti-scratch, high-resolution prints with an industry-leading warranty, according to Tom Wittenberg, HP's large format marketing manager, sign & décor, The Americas. Wittenberg agrees that the future is bright for the wraps and graphics market—and particularly for the professional sector—because of the economic benefits associated with mobile advertising on vehicles. Restylers can get excited about the prospects of this market, he adds, by understanding that they can bring the entire operation in-house. "An unexpected benefit for shops that learn to print their own vehicle wraps and graphics is the ability to control the entire process, start to finish." The biggest challenge, according to Wittenberg? "The misconception of how easy it is to design the graphics for the wraps." So, get those printers set up, start taking those art classes and prepare to ride the wraps wave. —Jef White BRINGING THE WRAPS MARKET IN-HOUSE HP's Latex 300 Series and HP Latex 500 Series printers are popular with wraps professionals because they are designed to produce instant-dry, anti-scratch high-resolution prints with an industry-leading warranty.
