Rideau District High School staff and students are returning from the summer to a redesigned parking lot, a new bus loading area and an elec- tronic sign. The most visible improvement to many people may be the new electronic sign which brings the convenience of wifi to changing its mes- sage. The contents of the sign's base will be of interest to a new genera- tion. Last Friday newly retired principal Sharon Halladay returned to school to place a time cap- sule in a cavity in the base. Halladay, at her request received the capsule as a retirement gift. Inside the container are cards from each student and staff member predicting what it will be like in 50 years. A copy of the school year- book and a copy of the Review-Mirror have also been included inside the capsule. Bus loading and unloading will be safer with students entering the vehicles from a sidewalk running along the side of the parking lot. The park- ing lot at the back of the school has been paved and divided into diagonal parking spaces. In next year's election, voters in the three other wards – Bastard and South Burgess, South Elmsley, and South Crosby – will be voting for two council- lors per ward, as in the past. The township will have a nine-member council, down from 10, with coun- cilors and a mayor avoid- ing the potential for tie votes. Portland resident Brian Preston, with the support of other township resi- dents, objected to the township not going with a six-councilor solution, an option consultants hired by the municipality had presented to the public in a survey. More than 50 per cent of the responses indicated support for the six-mem- ber council with 25 per cent supporting the option chosen by council - elimi- nating Newboro and fold- ing those voters into North Crosby Ward. The OMB decision noted there was no com- pelling evidence before the Board to suggest that the change would result in a disparity of voting power or ineffective representa- tion. Issues of the composi- tion of council are under the council's discretion under the Municipal Act. The change by council left representation within an acceptable range of vari- ance between wards. The tournament at Evergreen Golf Course and dinner and dance at the Westport Community Centre raised over $20,000 and Rideau alum- nus Jimmy Howard donat- ed another $20,000. The Detroit Red Wings goaltender, who also had his Westport Rideaus jer- sey retired Saturday night, had said he would match whatever was raised Satur- day, up to $20,000. The Ogdensburg native played two seasons for the Rideaus, starting in 1998 as a 14-year-old. The team expects to have the new centre ice clock installed for next season, a centre-piece for the ongoing improvements of the past three years. "It was a really nice night and my hat is off to the Rideaus alumni," Westport Councillor Frank Huth said. Howard and his wife and two children were guests of the Rideaus and Wolfe Springs on the weekend, but now it is back to business. He is expected to start the 2017-18 season as the Wings' starting goaltender. The exhibition season starts Sept. 19 in Boston. On Tuesday night, the Friends of the Arena (FOTA) wrapped up their summer work bees with some final touches includ- ing painting. The group dismantled the east wall, insulated it and elevated the stands, adding one more row for fans. "In the past two-and-a- half years, FOTA has raised over $100,000 and put in over 1200 hours of volunteer labour." Said Huth. The amount is separate from funds raised by the Rideaus alumni. "It is a true community centre," he said. On Tuesday, the Village of Westport also honoured Rick and Anne Smith as the volunteers of the month for their efforts on behalf of FOTA.
