The first school in the township of North Crosby was built before the 1830s, so it and others built after wouldn't be regularly used until 1871. Before 1871, most chil- dren were home schooled or could attend a school only when they weren't busy helping out the family. By making a public school education free, and passing more laws that stopped child employment, a parent could send their children to school much more regularly.
