12 SEPT. 18, 2017 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED UNDER THE DOME Notre Dame's 2017-18 men's basket- ball schedule was made public Sept. 7 after the ACC released the league slate for each of its members this season. Notre Dame will face North Caro- lina, North Carolina State, Georgia Tech and Boston College at home in Purcell Pavilion and also on the road. Other home matchups include Lou- isville, Miami, Florida State, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh. The North Car- olina (Jan. 13) and Louisville (Jan. 16) home contests will be back to back. Along with their four home-and- home opponents, the Irish will travel to face Duke, Syracuse, Virginia, Wake Forest and Clemson. Virginia closes out the regular season for the Irish. "Since we joined the ACC I have said, 'This will be the toughest sched- ule we have ever faced,' and this year is no different," head coach Mike Brey said in an university announcement. "I wonder what our schedule will look like when we get to 20 league games." The Irish, who finished 26-10 in 2016-17, will begin its regular season with a road tilt at DePaul (Nov. 11) in what will be the first game at the school's new venue — Wintrust Arena. In addition to home contests against Mount St. Mary's and Chi- cago State, Notre Dame will take part in the Maui Invitational in Novem- ber. The Irish will play Chaminade in the opening round Nov. 20, and then will face LSU or Michigan in their next contest Nov. 21. California, Marquette, VCU and Wichita State are on the other side of the bracket. A road game against a potential top-five Michigan State squad Nov. 30 is part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Crossroads Classic in Indianapo- lis rounds out the road non-confer- ence schedule with the Irish facing off against Indiana and new head coach Archie Miller Dec. 16. Brey will return to Delaware, where he coached for five seasons before ar- riving at Notre Dame, Dec. 9. Former Irish assistant Martin Inglesby is the current head coach of the Blue Hens. All 31 Irish regular season games will be broadcast nationally with 19 being on the ESPN family of networks, including Monday battles at Duke (Jan. 29), at North Carolina (Feb. 12) and home against Miami (Feb. 19). — Corey Bodden MEN'S BASKETBALL FACES CHALLENGING 2017-18 SCHEDULE Mike Brey and the Irish will face a tough road schedule this year, including returning to his first head coaching stop at Delaware. Under new defensive coordinator Mike Elko, however, last year's 4-8 slate was erased, and senior Greer Martini won the starting spot in the fall. The two shared snaps in the opener, Martini with 40 and Coney with 38, with Coney leading the team in stops with eight, highlighted by a crucial sack on third-and-five from the Notre Dame 9-yard line. The physical gifts always were there for Coney, but now as a junior they are matched by his daily approach to excellence. Coney's 2016 season began with an inauspicious tone when he was among five players arrested at the end of training camp for marijuana possession. His contrition and actions thereafter have sold the Irish head coach and the rest of the staff on his rebirth and commitment to stay on the straight and narrow. "Everybody has to make choices about where they want to be," head coach Brian Kelly said. "All of our players knew that they were going to be rewarded for their traits, not their talent. And he understood that no matter how good he looked and how many abs he had and how big his biceps were, he wasn't going to play unless he had the traits. "And so he made that choice, and that's why he's going to see success this year." — Lou Somogyi Coney notched a team-high eight tackles and one sack in the season-opening 49-16 win over Temple Sept. 2.
