OCTOBER 2017 THE WOLVERINE 39   MICHIGAN FOOTBALL WOLVERINES SUFFER ONE MAJOR INJURY IN THE EARLY GOING Several Michigan freshmen have al- ready made an impact on this year's team, but the Wolverines will be miss- ing one of them for the season. Defensive lineman Donovan Jeter was in line for playing time after he enrolled in the spring to get a jump on his preparation. He had surgery, head coach Jim Harbaugh announced Sept. 11, and will not return. End Luiji Vilain has also been banged up after he enrolled early and was slated to see some playing time. "Hopefully, he'll be back at some point soon, and it's not a long-term deal," Harbaugh added. Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore of- fensive tackle Grant Newsome contin- ues to progress. He is running and feel- ing better following last year's knee injury that nearly cost him his leg. "He's grinding, working out ev- ery day," Harbaugh said. "He's also coaching, he's a student coach, which is very valuable right now. He's a 'Go Blue' guy all the way and is progress- ing nicely. "Best-case scenario, he could be back for the bowl game, December … that time frame. He may not, either. That would be accelerated. You hope for the best and plan for longer." Redshirt freshman running back Ka- reem Walker and freshman wideout Oliver Martin didn't dress against Cin- cinnati. Both were "working through something," Harbaugh said. Redshirt junior cornerback Brandon Watson and sophomore corner David Long were banged up in the opener with Florida, but both returned to play in week two. — Chris Balas KHALID HILL SOUNDS OFF ON WILTON SPEIGHT CRITICISM Michigan's offense and redshirt ju- nior quarterback Wilton Speight were not outstanding through the first two weeks of the season. Speight threw two pick-sixes against Florida and followed that up with two fumbles (recovering one) against Cin- cinnati, all while sailing several passes over the heads of his wide receivers. However, fifth-year senior fullback Khalid Hill is as confident as ever in his quarterback and that the offense will get to where it needs to be. His philosophy on the mistakes — it's bet- ter for them to happen now than later. He also noted there was no frustra- tion in the Michigan huddle, thanks in large part to the veteran signal-caller. "Wilton does a great job of keeping the huddle light," Hill said. "He comes in and brings a calmness to the huddle. … He doesn't get frustrated at all. He does a great job of getting us together, influencing us and making us better as a team." "As much as people say, 'Wilton has bad throws' or whatever, he never lets Redshirt junior quarterback Wilton Speight was inaccurate throwing the ball and committed three turnovers in the first two games of the year, but his teammates remained confident in their offensive leader.
