snapshot HELPING HOUSTON In early September, Houston was hammered by Hurricane Har- vey. People around the country rallied to help the city's flood- stricken residents, including the University of Virginia athletics department. The school's 27 varsity teams donated shoes and clothing — all unused — to the relief effort. "Every sport has donated something to this cause," assistant equipment manager Chris Moore, who led the Cavaliers' initiative, told VirginiaSports.com. In all, Moore said UVA's donation included 300 pairs of shoes, 400-plus T-shirts, 150 pairs of sweatpants, 20 pairs of socks, 50 polo shirts and 100 caps. Some of UVA's coaches — including Aaron Smith of volleyball and Bryan Fetzer of track and field/cross coun- try — helped box up the gear so it could be shipped to Houston. "Hopefully this helps motivate others to give back, too," said Fetzer, who began his coaching career at Ranger College in Texas. PHOTO BY MATT RILEY/COURTESY UVA
