30 CAVALIER CORNER cavalier profile HALEY FAUNTLEROY Fourth-Year • Volleyball Fourth-year middle blocker Haley Fauntleroy tore her right labrum during the preseason of her second year, and surgery to repair the injury sidelined her for all of last season. "A lot of time was spent on rehab and regaining my shoulder strength so I could hit the ball and find the same power I used to have," Fauntleroy said. "I really wasn't sure if I would get back to normal strength. During the spring of my junior year, it felt like I was regaining more power." Fauntleroy credited her teammates with helping her persevere during a grueling rehab period. "What motivated me to maintain a positive attitude was know- ing my teammates were going to be there mentally," she said. "I'm a student-athlete mentor, and we're educated to help team- mates who are hurting. "I tried to be there for my teammates. I took on the role of sup- porting my teammates because they were young, and I cheered them on from the sidelines." Fauntleroy grew up in a volleyball family. Her older sister Katie played the sport at Colgate. Her brother Billy plays volleyball at USC, while her other sister Callie (Billy and Callie are twins) plays it at George Washington. "I feel very fortunate to have been able to play high school vol- leyball [New Trier in Winnetka, Ill.] on the same team as my sisters," Fauntleroy said. "I got to block along with Katie. She was a leader that I wanted to model my leadership after. She helped me to stay patient and helped me keep a good mental state. She was an amazing men- tor for me. By the time I was a senior, Callie was a freshman, and I was a mentor to her. Both of my sisters pushed me through high school." Whenever the trio played volleyball it wasn't just for fun. "They were significant in my developing a passion for volley- ball," Fauntleroy said. "It became competitive." Now that Fauntleroy has regained her strength and increased her on-court awareness, she's more able "to make a good read and a solid block." — Mike Scandura Photo by Matt Riley/courtesy UVA
