The 19-member choir includes nine boys and 10 girls ages eight to 10 who have been selected to ben- efit from the experience which allows them to receive an education while on the road and when they return to Uganda. "Education is such a given. It's hard to imagine there aren't government schools with education for all. Without an education you are pretty well rele- gated to simple tasks," said choir manager Tina Sipp. "In eastern Africa edu- cation is the ticket to being self sustaining. They are desperate. We are meeting a tangible need. It's not just for that one child. It causes a ripple affect around them," she said. The children are with the choir for about a year between training and the eight or so months on the road where they are accompanied by volunteer chaperones that become like their family. While on the road the choir members and chap- erones are hosted by the churches where the choir will be singing. "We are so grateful for our churches and our host families. We have been able to help Africa's chil- dren because of these churches all of these years. That money can go back to Africa because those churches and host families are helping so much," said Sipp. Following the tour, many Choir children are enrolled at the choir's boarding school on the shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe. This boarding school addresses all the needs of former Choir children during their Pri- mary education and in addition to the traditional Ugandan curriculum, the students receive extra training in music, art, computer studies and life skills. Over students are cared for by loving staff and receive the physical, emo- tional and spiritual support needed to reach their full potential. "We have about 1000 alumni. A good percentage of them have gone on to get their higher education and contribute back to their own families and beyond," said Sipp. The current choir began their tour on April 18 and will be returning home Jan. 3 after a tour which will have taken them across the United States, Manitoba and Ontario. "They are well sea- soned they have matured," said Sipp of the group which have been gaining confidence along with improving their English skills. The concerts begin at 7 p.m. and entrance is by free-will donation. "We encourage people to be generous, to invest in us. The children are gifted and talented and funny and polite. They don't have the opportunity. We are unashamed to ask for support on their behalf. No one knows the potential which lies in a child," said Sipp. More information on the choir and its education outreach is available at www. africanchildren- schoir.com.
