2017 / ISSUE 102 21 FILM The usual complication with typical boy meets girl stories often goes along the lines of something like, "daddy won't approve of this handsome working-class rogue" or "I'm a sassy blond woman who works in a flower shop and isn't impressed by the 200 roses the rich guy who comes in every day just bought." However, the Big Sick tells the story of a Pakistani man Kumail, living in America and working as a comedian. Despite his parents hating the fact he is chasing comedy, they accept it and all they ask in return is that he marries a Pakistani woman, whom his parents approve of as part of an arranged marriage. But one night when he is performing, a woman studying for a master's degree, Emily, heckles him in the crowd and from here love ensues. The only problem being with this perfect relationship is that she is a white woman and Kumail is not prepared to tell his parents, knowing that his family will disown him if they ever find out The plot thickens as Emily is taken into hospital and induced into a medical coma. Emily's parents come to look after her, with Kumail by their side. Knowing that he has not told his parents about Emily, they think that he does not care about their daughter. The story is based on the real- life courtship of Kumail who plays himself, and his actual wife, who both wrote the screenplay together. This film is definitely worth a watch, if not for the rom then definitely for the com and the coming together of cultures. The new indie film, The Big Sick, although lined with obvious romantic features, is a genuine laugh out loud rom com with a bit of a difference. Kristen Marhaver reminds us of the bleaching event in the Carribbean that took off big patches of skin on boulder corals. However, a couple of years later the coral was healthy again. Marhaver shows us that some corals can regrow in 10 years, others can take longer. As long as we continue to take off stresses like overfishing, sewage pollution, fertiliser pollution & coastal construction from corals, the better they will hang on. "We can be pessimistic and mourn what we took for granted or we can still be optimistic and still be ambitious about what we fight for," Marharver concludes. Pat Morita, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role as the elderly mentor Kesuke Miyagi, has sadly passed on, but fans will still be delighted to see that the Karate Kid franchise is still going strong. Over three decades after the release of the original Karate Kid movie back in 1984, Ralph Macchio, who starred as the bullied kid turned karate practitioner Daniel LaRuss, is set to reprise his role in a new series on YouTube Red.
