4 ISSUE 102 / 2017 NEWS MCDONALD'S WORKERS GO ON STRIKE FOR THE FIRST TIME! McDonald workers went on strike at fast food restaurants in the UK on 4th September, claiming McDonald's was paying them unfair wages. The McDonald's staff at Cambridge and Crayford voted in numbers to go on strike. Workers are demanding a minimum wage of £10 an hour, which is fair considering London's living wage is £9.75 and most workers are on their feet from morning till night. The specific date was chosen to show solidarity with workers in the US and other international fast food employees. The UK strike went ahead with the help of foreign organisers from the Unite Union in New Zealand, who paid a visit to striking workers. Employees from Belgium also came down to show solidarity. "For a long time we were told as fast food workers we were really hard to organise because people leave all the time and a lot of us are young people," said Shen Batmaz, a McDonald's worker and campaigner. "For us to see there were people doing it, not just in the US but all over the world, we knew it was time for us to come together." LONDON NEWS As if ending up next to the toilets on a congested, already late and expensive train wasn't enough, Londoners and those who commute into the city are now facing increased train prices. From January 2018, train users will see fares increase by 3.6%, meaning that already pricey and unaffordable journeys will be even more expensive and it is claimed that daily commuters will be the worst affected. With the cost of housing in London already over the top and trains outside of the city also being high-priced, it seems like there is no solution for those wanting a career within the capital. An upfront example of the price of train fares from the start of next year will be, for a yearly pass from Sheffield to London, an increase from an already extortionate £10,040 (for a 2-hour journey) to a ridiculous £10,401! Whilst a train ticket from Derby to London return, for example, (which is around a 1-hour, 30-minute journey) currently costs a whopping £138.50 last minute and will increase to £143.50 to catch the train on the spur of the moment. That's £1.59 per every minute of sitting in an overcrowded train coach feeling sick next to the toilets whilst first class has 90% of its seats free! OVERCROWDED, OVERPRICED AND OVERDUE, IT CAN ONLY BE TRAINS IN THE UK
