From there we started talking online, it was strictly music talk at first. Shortly after signing my track he got me to play @ DC10 for Paradise, I was literally unknown and it was my second ever professional gig. I did loads of gigs before but my first professional gig was in Stoke and then I played in DC10! After the gig, he invited me back to one of his villa parties. I couldn't believe it, I was used to only knowing the clubs in San Antonio from doing lads holidays. It blew my mind to see another side of Ibiza. I think we overstayed our welcome, but that was my first time hanging out with him properly, from there we kept talking online and he ended up signing about four of my EPs. He made me a Paradise resident and he also got me to play many other shows with him outside of Paradise, it's been mental. Since the beginning, now we have traveled together, we have played back to back together and I've got to know him outside of music. Really early on I got welcomed into his circle, as you said its a family business and I he brought us in straight away. I couldn't be more grateful for everything that Jamie has done for me. He definitely started my career, there are many ways to start a career but this is one of the most special ways to start one. he provided a platform for me to do my thing. Another thing about Jamie, which is the best thing about him, is that he is such a massive star in Electronic music and if you ever get to catch up with him, his feet are still on the ground. There are so many artists that are up there and they don't make their own music and they don't perform that well when they DJ and they have massive egos for some reason. Whereas Jamie is totally the opposite. he deserves to be where he is. You're so right, It's part of the reason he's gone so far, because of his character. I think part of the reason that he brought me in is we're are similar in that sense. As you said, he's sound as fuck isn't he? Just like Richy, another sound dude and also part of the Hot creations set up. Yeah, Richy is amazing, they are both different people though. Jamie is very quiet and reserved and Richy is out there, but yeah they are both lovely people to be around. So going back to the music production, how did you initially think I want to produce or get to the stage that you're confident enough to send music to Hot Creations? I didn't even send my track to Hot Creations, my mate sent it behind my back to the label. I thought I wasn't ready,I sent my tracks to other labels that weren't as big as Hot Creations but as I was saying one of my mates sent my track to Jamie without me knowing, and then he messaged me saying this guy called Paolo Pabz said he's giving your track to Jamie and I was like "you're lying!" Then Paolo got in touch with me, and it all kicked off from there. I wasn't confident to submit my music, at that point, it was quite a long time ago. I was making music for quite a while before that, I first did an online course with Point Blank which lasted for 4 weeks during my first year of Uni in Edinburgh. I went to Ibiza with Hailey and I was talking to her saying . "how can I come back here forever?" At that point, I decided that I needed to become a DJ in order to really make it happen. In my 2nd year of Uni I came back from Ibiza and said to my mom and dad that I wanted to get some decks for Christmas, I messed around on decks for about half a year and then I did that course. Also in Edinburgh, I did some night classes after two years passed I went back home and I was making music for a year when I moved back to my mum's house, that's when the Hot Creations thing came about, Are you currently using Logic or Ableton? I started using Ableton for about a day or so but I couldn't get my head around it. So I went to Logic but I didn't click with that straight away. The course I was doing was a four-week minimal techno course in Apple Logic believe it or not. I do wish I worked more with Ableton, I had a chat with Matador and he explained to me how he makes his tracks in logic and then uses Ableton. So for the first time, it's made me think, I kinda like the idea of doing a live show. I don't want to become a Live act, I just want to do one-off live shows every now and then. It's such a big thing rendering all your tracks into a live set and then using controllers. Well, there are many artists doing that, so why not. Yeah, exactly, but to get my catalog of tracks and render them all would take up so much time. I don't have the time at the moment. Anytime I have at the moment I spend making new music to push myself forward. Do you think if think you take your foot off the peddle from making tracks that would have an adverse effect to what you trying to achieve, what about people saying "Wow did you see Patrick Topping Live set"? It's funny you brought this up because it's something I need to speak to my manager about, we had a meeting before this but didn't have time to talk about it, So I think I need to drop the bombshell. So what has been going on this year, what are your highlights? This year has been mental! What are your highlights? There's been too many mate! Its mental, sometimes I think I have done so much stuff, I have done more stuff than probably ten people have done in their lifetimes. when I was younger I used to dream of going to Sonar, Miami Winter Music Conference etc and I have done all of them. I think the highlight was Cochella, Hailey came, her sister, three of her mates, my manager and some other people I know. I didn't take any gigs in between, actually, I did. (lol) I went to Canada for two nights!!! Hahaha, that's how busy you are! You can't even remember... We all had such an amazing time, normally I go to festivals and I'm in and out. At Cochella I did the whole first weekend which was so special to hang out with Hailey and all my crew. That was one of my biggest highlights. You also did Tomorrowland which is another world-class festival to play at? It was my Third time playing at Tomorrowland, and it is always a highlight of the year for me. It's so good. It's like Disneyland for adults. It's so cool. its one of the happiest vibes that you'll ever experience at a Festival. It's so hard to get tickets, everyone is so appreciative when they actually get there, the atmosphere is absolutely electric. My mate was trying to get tickets for the last 4 years and couldn't, this year he came with me which was nice. I love Time Warp, I didn't play but I went for my stag and it was definitely another highlight. I loved the aesthetic of it, it's completely different from Tomorrowland. Obviously, I got married and that was the biggest highlight of my year. You guys met at uni? No, I met Hailey two weeks before Uni. It's going to be 10 years in August. Yeah, we were so lucky with the weather. because in Newcastle its usually shit weather but it was bright blue skies, 18 degrees. Luckily, nearly everyone we invited was able to come. It went really smoothly, everyone says its the best day you will ever have. I mean I get excited about gigs but this was the most special moment of my life, it really was. The fact that we have been together for ten years and way before my career took off and the fact that she has been through the whole journey, she comes away with me sometimes, she actually works with me now, which is really cool. The fact that we are now married makes it perfect. Whats in store for you in the future? Richy has been doing A&R for Hot Creations but he is now doing his own Four Thirty Two imprint. Have you got plans to do an album or launch your own label? I really like the idea of doing an album, sometimes I write a track in three hours other times it takes two weeks. every year I take February off and I don't take any gigs. I use that time solely to make music. this year I made about 6 tracks and maybe another 3 since then, but I like having that stretch as opposed to having two days to get stuff done under pressure. When I have that month off I feel more relaxed and I have made some of my best tracks during that period. I don't want to take my foot off the gas with the gigs and festivals at the moment. I would rather write that album in one sitting. I can't see myself doing it anytime soon but probably 2020 I will have an album done. At the minute for me, the best thing to do is to have that month off in February, write a few EP's over the next couple years, but we are in talks about me starting my own label. I like the idea of having the freedom to put my music out whenever I like. I would love that full control, I still want to be part of Hot Creations etc, Jamie has supported and released loads of my music but he can't put out all of it. I also have a lot of music that other people have sent me that I would love to put out. I don't want to rush it but 2018 will probably be the time to launch my own label. That's an exclusive! So what have you got release wise coming up this year? B Sharp Say Nowt and Record Change are coming out in November on Hot Creations as an EP, I get messages from people asking about these tracks every day the hype that I have had from the B sharp track has had more hype than when "Forget" came out. Jamie played "Forget" at Paradise during BPM and it was broadcast on Be At TV in January, there were 4 months in-between the record coming out, I'm really excited about that coming out. I also have another EP on Lee Foss's label Repopulate Mars which will be my second one for them. Apart from that, I have loads of music that I'm saving for my label. I do have a couple remixes though, I have a remix coming out with TIGA, which people have been thinking its Green Velvets vocals. It sounds like him but it's not. Green Velvet and I are doing another collaboration but that's another story. I have a remix with Doorly and his new band called Back Talk, they have done a single with Idris Elba on the vocals called Paradise. Doorly said Idris asked if I could do the remix, I just finished watching the first series of The Wire and then I get asked to remix the track by Idris! Your journey has been so surreal, isn't it!!? Me and Hailey have been saying the same thing, we will have so many stories to tell the kids one day!!! Heading to Dublin and Birmingham, Patrick Topping will be bringing the heat to your local hangouts for a series of all day and night parties. 21st September - Dublin Bedlam presents: Patrick Topping City Takeover 26th September - Birmingham The Rainbow Venues presents: Patrick Topping City Takeover 2017 / ISSUE 102 31 follow @Patrick_Topping HOUSE "DOORLY SAID IDRIS ASKED IF I COULD DO THE REMIX, I JUST FINISHED WATCHING THE FIRST SERIES OF THE WIRE AND THEN I GET ASKED TO REMIX THE TRACK BY IDRIS!"
