Two years on from his stellar debut album, Long Beach rapper Vince Staples breaks through with this condensed, yet sparkling sophomore album Big Fish Theory. West London rap legend, Niko Dubh drops track for Grenfell victims Notorious B.I.G's Ready to Die gets an orchestral makeover. The tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire has compelled Niko The Dubh to come out of retirement, even if it is temporary. He has cut a track dedicated to the memories of those that lost their lives through the appalling negligence and failure of policy that led to the still unconfirmed death toll, likely to number up to 150 victims by the end of the year. As a member of Cash Crew in the early 1990s who along with Hijack, Demon Boyz, London Posse, MC D and Caveman formed the bedrock that would become the foundation of the UK hip hop scene we all know and love today. It is a little-known fact that Niko and his Cash Crew brothers made history as the first British rap act to make waves both in the US and in Europe. This haunting tribute to the victims of Grenfell exhibits the heartbreaking sadness and untold outrage of those who lost loved ones, local residents and disgusted members of public from across the country. On the 27th September, 20 years since Notorious B.I.G passed away, XOYO are hosting an orchestral rendition of the artist's critically acclaimed Ready to Die album. The 16 piece orchestra will perform the album in full with a new twist. The piece is one of hip hop's most important releases, gaining huge support and achieving quadruple platinum sales. Released in 1994, Ready to Die is officially known as a hip hop masterpiece. The remake of the album promises to be special! Production from the likes of SOPHIE and Flume to name a few gives it a versatile feel. In short, this album builds on just what made Summertime '06 so masterful - it's unpredictability. The opening track, aptly titled 'Crabs in a Bucket', starts with a very ethereal synth intro that gives way to a gorgeous garage-esque beat, reminiscent of Stankonia-era Outkast. We then fall into the lead single going into this album release, 'Big Fish'. Here we have the braggadocios Vince flowing over a very tight 808-heavy trap beat. He's definitely taken a step up lyrically, and this LP shows that in ample amounts. Now we land on to our personal favourite, titled 'Yeah Right'. The way Vince and Kendrick Lamar bounce off each other over this hard-hitting beat is something to marvel at. Vince definitely wasn't kidding when he said he's making music for 3017, not 2017.
