46 ISSUE 102 / 2017 INDIE Hailing from Milan, The Ghibertins bring us their latest offering, 'The Less I Know The Better'. Following off the back of a Huw Stephens live from Maida Vale session and a series of jammed out gigs, Otzeki are back with a new offering at Electrowerkz on October 25th. The song was recorded at MOB Sound Studio, experimenting with a fuller band sound, while retaining the minimalist acoustic guitar origins of their previous work. Drawing influence from a wide range of artists, including John Mayer, Ben Harper and Pearl Jam for the single, 'The Less I Know The Better' is pure and simple modern folk rock - with a bite. Lead singer Alessio Hoffman's lyrical declamations belted out against an energetic and nostalgically charged musical backing, combine a hefty dose of talent and proficiency - a veritable recipe for angsty folk rock heaven. After making a name for themselves on a warm foothold in the circuit of small venues, the London based electronic duo Otzeki have crafted their scintillating live shows around bringing alternative rock to a sub-rooted dance floor and breaking down the barriers between audience and stage. They've had support on the radio from everyone from Huw Stephens to Annie Mac to Phil Taggart to Pete Tong and counting a tip from MistaJam's NewNames, you are sure to start seeing these guys hit bigger line ups soon. Their set in October is a chance to catch the duo before they catch a wave of more main stream popularity. GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: THE GHIBERTINS EVENT REVIEW: OTZEKI TOUCH DOWN AT ELECTROWERKZ ARTIST OF THE MONTH: BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE Broken Social Scene are back with their first content to be realised in over 7 long years! Going by the name of Hug of Thunder, this album is their 8th to date and was named after an intense jamming session. 'Stay Happy' reins in 5th on the groups 12 track long playlist, and is arguably the stand out track. The single debuts the band's newest member, Ariel Engle and her youthful vocals that layer the already booming, sound heavy track with an innocent & inviting vibe. With such a large cast comes an ever-rolling conveyer belt of vocal diversity. Vocals range from Feist, who appears on tracks such as 'Vanity Pale Kids' to Kevin Drew on the track 'Please Take Me With You', cradled in frail synths that slips the album into a palpable softening as Hug of Thunder draws towards a close. Taking mismatch sounds and making them compatible and even beautiful is evident throughout this creation, married with the ever evolving vocal scope and tempo, the album feels hand crafted, cased in warmth and passed amongst every member.
