GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: THE BLACK SEEDS The reggae icon is set to perform live at the Jazz Cafe on the 29th of September! The Black Seeds release their sixth studio album Fabric as they come close to 20 years together. The 12 track LP ranges from funk, 80's rnb to groove- heavy tunes that perfectly capture The Black Seed's eclectic music style. Standout track 'Beleza' touches on how we can fight the "system", it sings "It's only a matter of time, before you spend your money and lose your mind, people of this world let's listen, don't play a fool to the system." The striking single leads on to hypnotic songs like 'Lost In The Bush' & 'Lightning Strikes' both fusing the usual reggae ingredients into their sound, with heavy synths & steady beats. But things don't stay serious for too long with their uplifting opener 'Better Days' which promises that "better days are coming, lonely nights are leaving," while 'The Weaver' cements this truth by reminding us that love conquers all pain. All in all, The Black Seeds Fabric shines through as a conscious album peppered with optimistic lyrics & irresistible instrumentation. Known as reggae's "mad scientist" Perry's innovative and experimental sound has dubbed him as one of the greatest artists of all time. As a legendary producer, influential performer and Grammy winning creator Perry has been at the forefront of the reggae movement as early as the late 50's. Noted for his mixing board experiments which resulted in the creation of dub, Perry's influence on today's reggae sound cannot be measured. As one of the major influences on the works of Bob Marley & the Wailers, Junior Byles, The Heptones and Max Romeo, Perry's lasting impact on reggae continues to branch out to inspire today's generation of artists. Not showing any signs of slowing down, Perry now 81, is bound to give us a show to remember as he brings the roof down with a peculiar but spellbinding performance. EVENT PREVIEW: DUB PIONEER LEE 'SCRATCH' PERRY BRINGS HIS UNIQUE SOUND TO LONDON ARTIST OF THE MONTH: BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH Dub poet, social commentator & music maker Benjamin Zephaniah teams up with producer Corin Pennington to create an incredibly timed album, Revolutionary Minds. Tackling everything from racism, sexism, global warming, political & economic corruption it is clear that Zephaniah's Revolutionary Minds is not just another generic reggae LP. Opening up with 'Earth Liberation Sound' Zephaniah's radical music verses remind us to come together to make a difference, as the heavy bass makes you nod along in agreement. The following track 'Revolutionary Minds' is essentially the heart of the record, speaking on issues such as "women shall not be property and "no one shall be judged by the colour of their skin," Zephaniah's flow in this is addictive to listen to. Standout songs such as 'President', 'What Stephen Lawrence Has Taught Us', 'More Animal Writes' and 'I Am A Revolutionary' keep you hooked with their thought provoking lyrics on police brutality and empower the listener to 'be the change they want to see', as the disjointed melodies & deep bass take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. It is obvious from start to finish, Benjamin Zephaniah's Revolutionary Minds is the perfect soundtrack for the modern revolutionist looking to get down with this dub thing. 52 ISSUE 102 / 2017 REGGAE PLAYLIST Lily Of Da Valley Jesse Royal Return Of The Super Ape Lee Scratch Perry Survivor Marla Brown The Itinuation Pablo Moses Here's the reggae on our playlist this month:
