Sick Abroad Being prepared and knowing your options are the keys to preventing an illness while traveling from ruining the entire vacation. STORY BY //CATHERINE ADDÉ ∫ ONCE I WAS SAILING IN THE CARIBBEAN ON A FAMILY REUNION CRUISE WHEN I SPIED, FROM THE BALCONY OF MY STATEROOM, A HELICOPTER HOVERING VERY CLOSE TO THE SHIP. SOON, OTHER PASSENGERS WERE PEERING FROM THEIR VERANDAHS AS WELL. WE WITNESSED THE DELICATE OPERATION OF AN AIRLIFT AMBULANCE RESCUE EFFORT. THE GURNEY IN A BASKET WAS LOWERED ONTO THE ship's deck and an ill passenger loaded in, then airlifted up and away to a nearby hospital. We were relieved when the ship's personnel announced later that the patient made a full recovery. This rather dramatic, albeit rare, occur- rence gives me cause to question: What if I'm taken ill while traveling? It's true that most countries with national insurance (aka socialized medicine) will treat a patient in an emergency, but one is presented with a bill in most cases. That's why it's a good thing to have travel insurance as most medical bills from emergencies that occur in foreign countries are not covered by an American health insurance policy.
