you are expecting a baby, there are strict rules on many airlines as well as cruise lines regard- ing their policies. Disney and Princess cruise lines for example, state that any mom-to-be must not be any further along than the 24th week of pregnancy or she'll be denied boarding the ship. I have heard of travelers being turned away at the pier, having to return home with their non-refundable unused cruise ticket. The travel suppliers do not want to be liable for any early deliveries or medical problems; can you blame them? In the end, some apprehension is normal but should not prevent you from experiencing the joys of travel. Before you go, simply take a few precautions and follow the motto: Be pre- pared. That way you won't have to seek out the doctor's offi ce while enjoying that moonlight sail on the Irrawaddy in Myanmar or the awe- inspiring sunset in the Seychelles. Catherine Addé is a native of Pasadena, a Certifi ed Travel Counselor affi liated with TravelStore and Signature Travel Network. She has a Master's Degree in Tourism Management and has held executive positions with Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Windstar and Cunard Line Ltd. She lives in two cottages, one in the hills above Pasadena and the other in Wales, UK, with her husband and two cats. drank the water while there, but did get sick from drinking the tap water in a London hotel while on a layover from that particular Asian adventure. My client Tom booked his bucket list trip to the south of France—he told me he was battling cancer at the time. Sadly, he took a turn for the worse while in Nice, called the doctor listed on his travel insurance card, who was dispatched to the hotel room armed with a pain killing shot. Tom fi nished his trip pain free and happy; enjoying the lavender fi elds in Provence and visiting various medieval villages surrounding Aix. If you're about to embark on an Adventure in the middle of nowhere, say base camp near Katmandu or tootling along the Amazon river, it's wise to make sure you are fi t, healthy, and have checked the CDC (Center for Disease Control) web site to check on any potential problems in the area. Also, to check to see what shots, inoculations or medicine is required for travel. I went to Africa once—spe- cifi cally a bush camp in Zambia—so I prepared myself before leaving with Yellow Fever and tetanus shots, malaria pills and DEET to keep the mosquitoes at bay. Zika outbreaks are the big concern nowadays and there is a chart on the CDC website to check exactly where the outbreaks are occurring. Another important medical issue to note: If I've had a tummy ache in France and sought out the local pharmacy as I forgot to pack some over the counter remedies. Another time, I caught a nasty cold on a Europe bound plane. This happened right before taking off as I introduced myself to my seatmate—who held out her hand, shook mine, and then apologized saying she had a cold! That's when I learned about the importance of hand sanitizers. The start of my trip was miserable: coughing and hacking away, but I was lucky it was only a cold. In Tahiti, I was snorkeling in a lagoon, among the back drop of an achingly beautiful Bali Hai. I was not paying attention as a fellow snorkeler nearby elbowed me very sharply in the eye, causing it to swell and turn purple. The doctor aboard Windstar's vessel treated me, joking that I must have made someone mad since they punched me out. It wasn't funny but it was interesting to note that on a small vessel like that one, personnel do "double duty." This doctor was also the windsurfi ng instructor for the passengers. Maybe I should have taken windsurfi ng lessons instead of snorkeling! Over the years, friends and clients have shared their travel stories with me as well. There was the time when my friend Gloria returned from India and I asked, "Weren't you afraid of getting 'Delhi belly?'" She replied that she'd been many times to India, never 138 SEPTEMBER 2017 the ESCAPES & GET AWAYS
