GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: CRITICAL SYSTEMS DROPS FIRE FROM QZB 44 ISSUE 103 / 2017 One of d&b's biggest labels will take over Printworks on 28th October. Stepping up for Critical's ninth edition of the Systems EP series are Swiss duo QZB. This pair have cooked up a five track monster, travelling sonically across all things murky and this could be the future of drum & bass. Formerly known individually as QBIG & Zenith B, the pair have teamed up and have been making serious noise. Joining the Critical team and presenting Systems Vol. 9, an unpolished trip into the darker realms. From the bellowing bass of the opening record it's clear the guys aren't fucking around. They get proper industrial, slamming down dark basslines below cutting edge half time hip hop shizniss and upfront drum & bass. Established in 1992 it's grown organically into one of the leading imprints for drum & bass. It has an unparalleled discography of tunes that trace the growth and development of jungle and drum & bass from the early 90s to today. Ram Records has a solid artist roster, held residencies at infamous clubs and held stage takeovers at tonnes of festivals. Not to mention nabbing the award for 'Best Label' countless times and securing daytime radio plays and top ten chart positions. This year marks a massive 25 years. To celebrate they're hosting three mental parties across the country including one at London's Printworks on October 28th. The events will honour the label's legacy while keeping doors open for the future. Cos one thing that has kept Ram at the top, it's the labels ability to keep moving forward despite its rich history. ALBUM OF THE MONTH: MAKOTO - SALVATION It's the Japanese producers 5th studio album and it's top form. Bringing a final flare of heat this summer is Makoto's latest album. It's his first solo work for Hospital since signing exclusively with them earlier this year. It's a well executed release which sees Makoto really show off his talents. The producer rose to prominence after being signed to Bukem's Good Looking Records in 1999. The scene was taken in by the producer's infectious grooves. All given a heavy dosage of soul and jazz; his trademark smooth, atmospheric records have garnered him support from across the board and over the years has seen his tunes on labels including Fabio's Creative Source & Zinc's Bingo Beats. Salvation is the current peak of Makoto's work. Across 14 tracks the producer works his way through blissful, uplifting and at times mystical moments that culminate to a truly jaw dropping album. From the reflective vibes in 'Silver Lining' to the ravey cuts 'Primitive Galaxy' & 'Desert Night' or the funk laden 'Fancy Free' - this album demonstrates the truly magical touch Makoto has.
