48 ISSUE 103 / 2017 INDIE The legendary lead singer for The Heartbreakers died of cardiac arrest on the 2nd of October surrounded by friends, family and bandmates. Known for hits like 'Free Fallin', You Don't How It Feels', 'Wildflowers' & 'I Won't Back Down' Petty's contribution to music has been described as the "embodiment of rock 'n' roll." His timeless songs, openness to new sounds and heartfelt voice saw him dominating the Billboard's rock chart in the 70's, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002 and it was just in 2014 that Petty debuted at number one with the album Hypnotic Eye. Recently completing a tour at the Hollywood Bowl for the band's 40th anniversary, Petty was proud of the legacy his music has had on countless people. Speaking to Esquire in 2006 he said: "As you're coming up, you're recognized song for song or album for album. What's changed these days is that the man who approaches me on the street is more or less thanking me for a body of work – the soundtrack to his life, as a lot of them say. And that's a wonderful feeling. It's all an artist can ask." NEWS: ROCK ICON TOM PETTY DIES AT AGE 66 ALBUM OF THE MONTH: NOAH GUNDERSEN Moving away from his usual balladry acoustic sound, Noah Gundersen steps it up with a heftier production on his latest album White Noise. With a swoon-worthy voice & seamless synths scattered throughout this LP it is obvious Gunderson has created another mouthwateringly good LP, through and through. Standout tracks such as 'Bad Desire, 'After All' & 'Bad Actor's' have a classic rock feel to them and it seems to bleed into Gundersen's songwriting as well. On the track 'Cocaine, Sex & Alcohol' Gundersen takes us on a psychedelic trip, with droning bass lines that give off a very Thom Yorke vibe, as he sings, "Do you wanna see my show? Cocaine, sex and alcohol." Whereas the closing tracks 'Dry Year' & 'Send The Rain (To Everyone') sound extremely intimate, emphasised by Gundersen's stripped back voice, heatbreaking lyrics and ambient sounds. It is obvious the new approach in Gundersen's sonic delivery & mature songcrafting has paid off, as White Noise is one more Noah Gundersen 'certified masterpiece'` TRACK OF THE MONTH: FIRST AID KIT Swedish sisters Klara & Joahanna Söderberg return with beautifully folky song, 'It's a Shame'. Punctured with powerful vocals & delicate guitar play, 'It's a Shame' is an upbeat number that touches on "the emptiness and desperation you feel after a relationship has come to an end, how you will go to great lengths just to numb the pain and feel less lonely." The track is taken from the band's forthcoming new album, which is a follow up to their stellar 2014 LP Stay Gold. Catch the duo live at London's Shoreditch Town Hall on the 1st of November!
