MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Fifth-year senior Ben Flanagan helped lead Michigan to a first-place finish out of 13 teams at the adidas XC Challenge Sept. 15 in Cary, N.C. … Flanagan placed first individually for the second straight race and earned him Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors for the first time in his career … Michigan followed up its im- pressive showing at the adidas XC Chal- lenge by finishing fourth out of 21 teams at the Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational Sept. 29 … Flanagan led the way yet again, coming in 14th out of 177 runners … U-M was one of only three teams in the 21-team field that featured six top- 50 finishers … On Oct. 13 at the Nut- tycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madi- son, Wis., No. 25-ranked Michigan placed eighth in a 35-team field that included 20 of the top 30 teams in the nation … Fla- nagan paced the Wolverines again, plac- ing 22nd … The Big Ten Championships will be held Oct. 29 in Bloomington, Ind. WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Fifth-year senior Gina Sereno grabbed her first career Big Ten Athlete of the Week award Sept. 13 after she led Michigan to a victory at the Indiana State John McNich- ols Invitational Sept. 9 in Terre Haute, Ind. … The Wolverines finished first among nine teams at the Indiana Sam Bell Invi- tational Sept. 30, fending off the No. 14 Hoosiers, who hosted the event … Michi- gan was led by fifth-year senior Jamie Morrissey, who registered a second-place finish … The No. 4 Wolverines placed fifth in a field of 43 teams at the Pre-National Invitational Oct. 14 in Louisville, Ky. … The Big Ten Championships will be held Oct. 29 in Bloomington, Ind. FIELD HOCKEY 13-2-0 OVERALL, 7-0-0 BIG TEN Michigan cruised to a 6-0 victory over Michigan State in its Big Ten opener Sept. 15 at Ocker Field … The Wolverines set the tone early against the Spartans, scoring two goals in the opening 10:17 of play … U-M followed up its shutout of MSU by blanking Ohio State 1-0 in over- time Sept. 22 … Junior forward Emma Way scored the lone goal of the game at 84:40 … The Maize and Blue contin- ued their dominant defensive ways two days later at No. 3 Penn State, topping the Nittany Lions 3-0 for their fourth con- secutive shutout … Way provided late- game heroics yet again in a 3-2 victory over No. 15 Maryland Sept. 29, scoring the game-winning goal at 99:59 … The victory over the Terrapins was Michigan's first since defeating them 2-0 in the 2001 national championship game … Sopho- more midfielder Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort tallied her first career goal in a 5-0 shutout of Ball State Oct. 1 … Michigan picked up its eighth straight win and sev- enth shutout in eight games with a 3-0 triumph over No. 12 Stanford Oct. 8 … Sophomore midfielder Meg Dowthwaite compiled her team-leading 13th goal of the season against the Cardinal … After its win over Stanford, Michigan moved up to No. 3 in the NCAA Field Hockey RPI … U-M stretched its winning streak to 10 games with a 2-0 win at Indiana Oct. 13 and a 3-2 victory at No. 22 Iowa … The win over the Hawkeyes clinched Michigan at least a share of its ninth Big Ten regular-season championship … The Big Ten Tournament will start Oct. 29, with the first round of the NCAA Championships beginning Nov. 11. MEN'S SOCCER 8-4-2 OVERALL, 4-1-1 BIG TEN Michigan's Sept. 13 matchup with then-No. 1 Indiana resulted in a 1-1 draw … After surrendering a goal in the 12th minute, the Wolverine defense did not allow a shot for the next 35 minutes … A sellout crowd of 2,637 fans — the fourth- largest in U-M Soccer Stadium history for a men's matchup — showed up to watch the Maize and Blue's 1-0 overtime loss to No. 6 Michigan State Sept. 17 … Freshman midfielder/defender Jackson Ragen scored his first career goal in the 56th minute of a 3-1 victory over North- western Sept. 24 … Sophomore forward Jack Hallahan netted the game-clinch- ing goal with just 37 seconds left in the second overtime of Michigan's 2-1 win over Penn State Oct. 1 … At halftime of the Wolverines' 3-1 triumph over Rutgers Oct. 6, Michigan honored its 1997 club soccer national championship team, along with more than 50 other alums … Freshman forward Mohammed Zakyi tallied three assists against the Scarlet Knights, tying a program record; it was also the first time a U-M player racked up three assists in a contest since Knox Cameron in 2003 … Michigan checked in at No. 24 in the United Soccer Coaches poll prior to its 3-1 loss at No. 7 Notre Dame Oct. 10 … On Oct. 14, U-M beat Omaha 2-1 in two overtimes … Fresh- man Mohammed Zakyi scored both of Michigan's goals and leads the Wolver- ines in goals with five … The first round of the Big Ten Tournament starts Nov. 4. WOMEN'S SOCCER 5-5-6 OVERALL, 2-4-3 BIG TEN The Wolverines grabbed a 2-1 victory over Indiana Sept. 17 to notch their first conference win of the season … Junior forward Reilly Martin scored her first goal of the year in the match, while freshman midfielder Nicki Hernandez tallied the first goal of her career … Senior goalkeeper Sarah Jackson racked up a season-high 10 saves (one short of her career high) in a 2-2 draw against Minnesota Sept. 21 … U-M picked up a huge overtime road win Sept. 24, defeating No. 9 Wisconsin 2-1 … Martin scored the game-winning goal in the 96th minute … It marked the first time the Wolverines had beaten a top-10 team since 2014, when they also took down a Badgers squad that was ironically ranked No. 9 … Michigan's 1-1 double-overtime draw with Nebraska Oct. 1 was its sev- enth overtime contest of the season, ty- ing a program record (2003 and 2006) … The Maize and Blue's schedule was rated as the fourth-toughest in the nation, ac- cording to HERO Sports …The Wolverines suffered through a tough patch to begin October, losing at No. 14 Penn State (2-0), at No. 7 Ohio State (1-0) and at Michigan State (2-1) … U-M came in at No. 46 in the NCAA Women's Soccer RPI Oct. 15. VOLLEYBALL 13-7 OVERALL, 3-5 BIG TEN U-M kicked off the Michigan Challenge with a 3-0 sweep of North Carolina State Sept. 15 … Junior outside hitter Carly Skjodt led the way with a team-high 13 kills … Skjodt tallied another impressive performance the following day in a 3-0 victory over Milwaukee, recording 16 kills … Skjodt earned Co-Big Ten Player of the Week honors as a result … The Wolverines finished the Michigan Challenge with a 3-0 record after their 3-0 shutout of Cincinnati Sept. 16; U-M did not lose a set throughout the entire event … A record-setting crowd of 8,137 fans showed up to Crisler Center Sept. 29 to witness Michigan's 3-1 victory over Ohio State … The previous record for attendance was 2,673 fans against Oregon State in 2009 at Cliff Keen Arena … Senior outside hitter Adeja Lambert racked up a career-high five aces in U-M's 3-1 vic- tory over Maryland Sept. 30 … Michigan dropped its first home game of the season Oct. 7 in a 3-0 setback to No. 6 Minnesota … On Oct. 13, U-M stopped Rutgers 3-1, before falling 3-0 to No. 2 Penn State the next day in State College. ❏
