Back when typewriters were still in common use, it was sometimes necessary to throw out the entire page if a mistake was made. This was especially the case if carbon paper and onion skin had been used to make multiple copies. Occasionally an incorrect character could be erased with correcting plates and type erasers like the ones on display at the museum. He was presented the award last Friday at Portland Legion. Bolton has lived in Portland since 1949 and he and his wife Reba still live in the same home which they built and moved into in 1951 and where they raised their children. He worked with wood all his life, as a sash maker, a carpenter and as a draftsman. Bolton was a firefighter for 20 years and the fire chief for five years before retiring in 1975. He was a long-time member and Warden of Emmanuel Anglican Church and not only helped those in need in his community but also con- tributed his time and skills to fix and renovate the buildings of the three churches in the Rideau Pastoral Charge. He is a WWII veteran and an active member of the Portland Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, participating in the Remembrance Day ser- vices in Portland and Elgin and always helping with fundraising events. He is well known in his community for offering his assistance to anyone needing a ride to a doc- tor's appointment or help fixing a door or window or even a bike that needs repairing. Bolton named township Senior of the Year Rideau Lakes Councillor Rob Dunfield presented Carl Bolton with the Rideau Lakes Township 2017 Senior of the Year Award at Legion Branch 231 last week.
