EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY Father Richard Ryan remembered for his service to archdiocese F ather Richard Ryan passed away Oct. 6, 2017, after serving the Archdiocese of Denver for 38 years. He was 77 years old. Father Ryan was born in Chicago on June 29, 1940, to Margaret and Edmond Ryan. He attended school in his home- town and went on to achieve a bachelor's in political science at DePaul University. In 1962, he entered the novitiate of the Congregation of the Mission at Perryville, Mo., where he completed a bachelor's in philosophy. Father Ryan professed vows in the congregation in 1967, and was ordained to the priesthood at DeAndreis Semi- nary on May 24, 1969. Upon ordination, he obtained both a license and doctor- ate in canon law from the Catholic Uni- versity of America. For 13 years, Father Ryan served as a professor at St. Thomas Seminary in Denver. After receiving an appointment to serve on the Tribunal of the Apostolic Penitentiary, he moved to Rome for a period of three years. Subsequently, he returned to Denver and resumed his position at St. Thomas Seminary. When the seminary closed in 1995, Father Ryan remained in Denver until 2013; a period in which he remained heroically committed to many min- istries at Risen Christ Parish and throughout the diocese, despite his constant health issues. He showed a particular love for the Knights of Columbus, serving two terms as state chaplain. "He loved the Knights and the Knights loved him," said Dave Resen- dez, Father Ryan's closest friend for over 25 years. "He was fun and loving; always available to people. He would say, 'I'm as close as the phone,' and he was – people could call him at any time." Father Ryan was also chaplain of the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, the Irish Festival and the Ladies' Auxiliary, during this time, and worked with the sick and elderly for many years. "He was so popular that on his 40th anniversary, over 40 Knights showed up to do an honor guard, and the church was packed," said Resendez. "Many con- sidered him a very dear friend." In Oct. 2013, as his health began to decline, he moved to the Apostle of Charity Residence in Perryville, Mo., where he lived happily until his death. A memorial mass will be celebrated in his honor at Risen Christ Parish on Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. BY VLADIMIR MAURICIO-PEREZ vladimir.mauricio-perez@archden.org Father Richard Ryan passed away Oct. 6, 2017.
