Mirror The Review •Continued on page 3 Halloween activities across the region On Wednesday West- port council approved the purchase of an additional 15,000 tons of sand to complete work on the waste treatment plant adding $220,000 to the project. The extra sand is in addition to the 33,000 additional tons, at a cost of $488,000, approved for the project on Oct. 5. The two change orders requested by Aecom Engioneering have increased the original 77,000 ton estimate by 62 per cent, adding an addi- tional $710,400 at the rate of $14.80 per ton. The original tender was $1.2 million for 77,000 tons. The sand has been within the parameters of a sieve test conducted at the pit but has compacted at the site more than was anticipated. At a special council meeting at 8 a.m. Oct. 25, council retreated into a closed session to discuss the decision which has the potential to bring legal action. "It's a complicated issue. We are mindful of the need to get the job done, mindful we don't have deep pockets as a vil- lage. We are a council that is exploring all options to resolve the pressures we will feel as a result of this," said Mayor Robin Jones. Tackaberry will be holding the original price of $14.80 per ton which the village paid in 2016. Delivery of the additional material will be completed by the end of next week, allowing for the comple- tion of the work by the Nov. 20 deadline, said Jones.
