During the 18th and 19th cen- turies, in parts of Southern Ireland, a man dressed as a white mare led chil- dren from house to house reciting verses with pagan overtones in exchange for food. If the household donated food it would bring good fortune, but if they refused to do so, it would bring misfortune. Guising (disguising or dressing up in costume) for Halloween in North America was first recorded in 1911 in a newspaper in Kingston, Ontario.
