The public is invited to the Lions Beach house this Friday at 7 p.m. to see Westport as the fictional community of Gentle Bend. Admission is free. Norm Berketa and his team spent time in West- port this summer filming some scenes and back- ground shots for the pilot of Gentle Bend, a series he and writing partner Allison Graham were finally able to bring to life this sum- mer. Berketa is hoping the pilot will be able to gener- ate enough interest to sell it to a network. "We are still in the works of getting a literary agent to represent us," said Berketa who has another six episodes ready to pro- duce. Last weekend the episode premiered to the cast and crew in Ottawa. "Everyone got to see it. They loved the story. Hopefully we have a win- ner on our hands. It's good and quirky. I'm sure we captured the essence of any small town," he said. The trailer for the episode can be found on YouTube with a search of Gentle Bend trailer. Westport Cares brings in $6,500 Westport Cares, a fundraiser for Red Cross International Disaster Relief raised over $6500 at a beach party concert on Sunday afternoon. Organizers Seamus Cowan and Paul Millar created the event in response to the need for international help which recent hurricanes and wild fires have caused. "The musicians were generous to donate their time. Seamus and I were happy with how it turned out," said Millar. The weather cooperated with the event which even included a swim in the non-Caribbean and non- temperate October waters of Sand Lake. Fundraising for the event is continuing online at the Red Cross website at www.redcross.ca/IDRF/W estportCares where an additional $1,075 has been raised so far. Township of Rideau Lakes council has appoint- ed an ad hoc committee of five residents to make an independent council remu- neration review. Council will have the ultimate decision to pass a bylaw to implement any new compensation regime which could take effect for the 2018-2022 term. Wendy Alford, Dave Brown, Anna Greenhorn, Brian Preston and Paul Smith were chosen from a field of 11 candidates. Two of the five appointees, Anna Green- horn and Paul Smith, have served on Rideau Lakes Council. Dave Brown served on the South Cros- by council before amalga- mation. Wendy Alford served on Smiths Falls council. By 2019, councillors stand to lose ground if the current rate of remunera- tion is kept in place. A pro- posal by the federal gov- ernment would drop the current tax exemption on one third of their compen- sation. Rideau Lakes Council's remuneration was raised in 2014 when the honorarium for the mayor was set at $12,668 and councillors at $9,881. The bylaw sets hono- rariums that are to rise each year as the same rate determined for township employees. Council can also charge for committee meetings and other occur- rences which have been authorized by council. Committee members will receive $50 per meet- ing plus mileage.
