GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 28, ISSUE 2 17 George Karlaftis committed to Purdue on Oct. 20, giving the Boilermakers one of their most significant recruiting wins in recent history. The 2019 blue- chip defensive lineman/ tight end announced his commitment following West Lafayette High School's 79-7 sectional win over Benton Central, saying that "gold and black runs in my blood." The four-star junior had offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame, Alabama and dozens more. Photos by Tom Campbell (Karlaftis, bowl); Portland (SWanigan); Purdue (ceremony, volleyball) Caleb Swanigan debuted for Portland on Oct. 18, scoring eight points and pulling four rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench in the Trailblazers' win at Phoenix. Two nights later, he scored a couple free throws in his home state of Indiana, when the Trailblazers defeated the Pacers in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. On Sept. 8, the day of the home opener vs. Ohio, Purdue dedicated its new football performance complex, the home of the Boilermakers' new locker room, office, weight room and more. The $65-million facility was completed in only about a year-and- a-half of construction. Purdue opens its defense of its Big Ten regular- season title early this season, as it commences conference play with a Dec. 3 date with Northwestern in Mackey Arena. Conference schedules are condensed this season, because the league will hold its tournament a week early in Madison Square Garden. The opener vs. NU also marks the 50-year anniversary celebration of Mackey. Senior night for the volleyball team was shifted to Friday, Nov. 24 vs. Michigan State, after the Boilermakers moved the Michigan game on Nov. 25 to the 22nd. Purdue wants to make sure its rested for the NCAA Tournament the following week. But on Nov. 24, it'll honor seniors Danielle Cuttino, Ashley Evans, Azariah Stahl and Carissa Damler. Purdue is hoping to play in one of the 10 Big Ten bowl tie-in games this season, ranging from the Dec. 23 Lockhead Martin Armed Forces Bowl to the Jan. 1 Outback and Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus bowls. Of course, the Boilermakers will need to get to at least six wins, a quest that took a hit with a loss at Rutgers Oct. 21.
