And the World University Games conditioned Purdue for upped tempo, with the interna- tional game's 24-second shot clock, six seconds shorter than American college basketball. Purdue averaged almost 103 points per game, shot 56 per- cent from two-point range and 43 percent from three in eight formal games in Taipei. Some of those opponents were badly overmatched, yes, bloating the numbers, but throughout the event, scoring was the least of Purdue's problems, and when it was, it had nothing to do with the shot clock. That aggressiveness should be evident in halfcourt situations, as well. Purdue's guards say they're eager to look for their shots. "The last few years, we've had two post guys to throw it to and to rely on, but I think this year we are going to have to take guys off the dribble a little," Mathias said. "We are going to have to create plays and make things happen for other people, and I think we definitely have the ability to do that." STILL BIG, THOUGH A.J. Hammons and Swanigan have departed the past two seasons, but the last in Purdue's collection of out- standing big men remains, as Haas moves to the fore- front as a senior. This is his year. It has to be. Haas will see his minutes spike, basically to as many as he can handle productively. And when he's on the floor, he will be featured, likely to be Purdue's Tom Campbell Senior big man Isaac Haas will be the focal point of Purdue's offense this season in a more expanded role. But he'll also be counted on to improve as a rebounder.
