GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 28, ISSUE 2 85 Karissa McLaughlin 1 5-7 • G • Fr. Breakdown: Ide- ally, Purdue would try to lessen the pressure on McLaughlin, easing her into a role by bring- ing her off the bench early in her career. It might not have that luxury, however. The Boilermakers need her scoring punch — the freshman has range well beyond the three-point line — but more importantly they need a point guard. McLaughlin can fill both roles, although she's perhaps not a prototypical point. There she'll have to run Purdue's offense, but will also want to look to find openings for herself. That's a lot to put on a freshman but Purdue has limited other options. 11 Dominique Oden 5-8 • G • So. Breakdown: Oden was great as a true freshman, perhaps bet- ter than anyone could have anticipated, aver- aging 10.8 points per game while shooting an efficient 44.4 percent from the field. But de- fenses will be geared more toward slowing her now, and so she'll have to be more versatile offensively. She has the skill set, with a nice runner and pull-up jumper, to go along with the three-pointer. She hit 61 of those last season, knocking them in at a 36.5-percent clip. Andreona Keys 10 5-10 • G • Sr. Breakdown: There aren't many players as well-rounded as Keys in the Big Ten, as the senior forward can score, rebound and defend. Last season, she averaged 9.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, with 47 steals. She'll need to replicate those numbers this season, at least. But Purdue might need more scoring. Keys' three-point shot — and jump shooting in general — was improved, as she hit 16. If that can take another bump, then she could give the Boilermakers a third perimeter scorer who can also post up given the right matchups. Tamara Farquhar 25 6-0 • G • Fr. Breakdown: Far- quhar might be a wing in time, but for now Purdue needs the rookie in the post. She was slated to start from Day 1 — that'll be slightly delayed, probably 'til around Thanksgiving due to a knee injury — because Sharon Versyp likes her defensive intensity, her ability on the glass and her ath- leticism. Those traits will get her on the court, and they could be a matchup advantage against slower 4s. But Farquhar is raw, and maybe a bit unorthodox offensively, so it's difficult to anticipate what type of scoring she'll provide. Maybe some hustle points, driving to the basket or off offensive rebounds, but those count, too. Meet The Boilermakers — Kyle Charters
