ifteen years ago, then-26-year-old assistant Kathy Jewell was the veter-
an of Purdue's volleyball staff, even though her boss was 18 years her
senior.
Jewell had spent the two previous seasons as an assistant at Central Michi-
gan, so she was knowledgeable about NCAA regulations, like recruiting stipu-
lations on which prospects could be contacted when, and she was the only one
on staff with such familiarity.
Dave Shondell, entering his first year as Purdue's head coach, had spent his
previous 22 years coaching high school and club volleyball. And John Shondell,
Dave's younger brother and top assistant, had been a high school coach for the
previous 14 seasons.
Over the years, the Shondells had built up hundreds of relationships, not
only because of their own coaching experiences but also their family history
— dad Don Shondell is a retired men's volleyball coach at Ball State, where
