Thursday, November 2, 2017 Serving North Leeds and area since 1893 Vol. 126, No. 43 $1 incl. tax Canada Post Contract No. 40021501 Cousins Sebastian Langlois and Frances Mensen got some Halloween fun at the Mensen Farm on Saturday when their families hosted a pumpkin carving, part of a fundraiser for the Athens and Delta food banks. United Counties social housing management believe seniors only hous- ing designations for some facilities would not elimi- nate the problem of bad behaviour and conflicts between tenants. The United Counties Joint Services Committee received a report last month from Community and Social Services Direc- tor Alison Tutak in response to requests by Township of Edwards- burgh Cardinal Mayor Pat Sayeau and Westport Mayor Robin Jones who wanted social housing buildings, including Mountainview Manor, in their municipalities desig- nated as seniors-only. A survey conducted by social housing managers in August gauged resi- dents' feeling of safety and security within their buildings. From the 481 units the county manages, 221 surveys were com- pleted. Of the respondents 79 per cent agreed or strongly agreed that they felt safe in their unit with fewer respondents, 73.3 per cent, agreeing or strongly agreeing that they felt safe in common areas. The report noted that 75 per cent would recom- mend social housing as a good place to live and 66 per cent reported that there had been no incidents in the building that made them feel unsafe in the past 12 months. "The desire by staff is to have significantly more than 66 per cent of the ten- ants not having experi- enced an unsafe situation in their building in the past 12-month period," stated Tutak in her report. She noted that if desig- nating buildings seniors only was to reduce the numbers of ill behaved tenants it would not reme- dy the problem. "The behavioural issues within social hous- ing are similar for senior- aged tenant as non-senior aged. If the goal is to bet- ter manage the behaviour of other tenants, this is a challenge for all land- lords," said Tutak. She noted the designa- tion of seniors only build- ings would reduce or limit housing options for those outside a seniors age range and could prevent some people from staying in their home community. Waiting lists for buildings without age restrictions would increase.
