The Review-Mirror November 2, 2017 – 16 Hundreds of pumpkins were carved Saturday afternoon at Lockwood Field where, once evening came they lit up the night. Carving on the Westport Arts Council team were (l-r) Marianne Roberts, Kim Bonner, Ann Savage, Nancy Mattice and Lisa Jack- son. The event raised funds for the Children's Wish Foundation. The Portland Branch of Victoria's Quilts Canada (VQC) held their recent "Quilt Raffle" fundraising draw for two quilts by Eleanor Taylor Taylor, a long time quilter, was a founding member of Victoria's Quilts Canada Portland Branch (2001). During her years with the group she contributed numerous beautiful quilts, including the two which were the prizes in this recent raffle. VQC is grateful for her donation of these excep- tional works. The draw was held Oct. 23 with winning tickets drawn by Marty Crapper, Executive Director of Country Roads Communi- ty Heath Centre, Portland. Winners: 1st prize: handmade and hand quilted, Gayle Bradley, Ottawa 2nd prize: made and quilted by machine, Anna Norman, Kingston Victoria's Quilts Cana- da provides homemade quilts to people living with cancer. We hope to bring physical comfort to these cancer patients as well as spiritual comfort in know- ing that they are not alone in their struggle. The quilts are a gift with no cost passed to the quilt recipient or the per- son making the request. We welcome new vol- unteers. You do not need to be an "expert" quilter or sewer as there are other ways you can help. We do not teach quilting, but we find that we learn a lot from each other from sewing/quilting basics to new techniques and tricks. On the fourth Monday of the month (unless it is a stat holiday ) they gather for a monthly work bee and meeting in the activity room of the Portland Country Roads Communi- ty Health Centre. As the demand for quilts continues to rise, the generosity of donors and of our volunteers help us to carry out our mission. A consultation docu- ment is available online in a link from the township website 'notices' section to provide more informa- tion for respondents before they begin the sur- vey. Council is seeking input to identify priorities for the coming year and have provided a back- ground paper for partici- pants to read before filling out the survey. Previous years' attempts to engage resi- dents on the budget process through public meetings have been met with a significant lack of interest from the public. "We thought the survey would be convenient, par- ticularly by our seasonal residents," said Mayor Ron Holman who is also encouraging residents to contact their councilors or himself if they don't want to take the survey. Holman says this year's budgeting includes a lot of unknowns, including the potential, depending on the amount of winter maintenance, to carry over a slight deficit into 2018. Capital program priori- ties include the township's share of improvements to Elgin's Main Street, a counties project, docks in Portland, continuing road improvements and mainte- nance as well as decisions on public facilities in Port- land. Work will be carried out in the coming months to bring more detail to the township's asset manage- ment plan as well as the development of a 10-year financial plan.
