Aquila, S.T.L, by the grace of God and the favor of the Apostolic See, Archbishop of Denver The Second Vatican Council, in its Decree Concerning the Pastoral Oce of Bishops in the Church, (CD, 32) provides that the diocesan bishop is responsible for the pastoral care of those living in the diocese. He is to see to their spiri- tual well-being by establishing parishes or, when necessary pursuant to univer- sal and particular law, quasi-parishes, when it is opportune to do so. In virtue of this mandate, and to serve the growing population of the Northglenn/Thornton area and the increasing number of parishioners at Immaculate Heart of Mary, after having consulted the Presbyteral Council of the Archdiocese of Denver on the 13th day of September 2017 (Prot. N. 2017-0567 AB-A) and the priests of the Northeast Deanery, and in recognition of the community of Christian faithful already coming together to celebrate the Mass at Frassati Catholic Academy, by this decree, I canonically establish a new territorial quasi-parish (CIC, canon 516 § 1), in the Northeast Dean- ery, under the patronage of Saint John Paul II, whose feast is celebrated on the 22nd day of October. I also approve its statutes (CIC, canon 117), which are attached to this decree. The administration of its temporal goods is subject to the existing univer- sal and diocesan norms, as well as any applicable civil laws. The banking and financial adminis- tration of Saint John Paul II quasi-par- ish shall remain an aspect of Immac- ulate Heart of Mary, yet be accounted for separately, until such a time as a civil non-profit corporation is erected. After consultation with the pastor and parish finance council of Immacu- late Heart of Mary, it is hereby decreed that this parish shall, before the 1st of December 2017, pursuant to the pro- visions of CIC, canon 122, contribute/ designate the sum of $20,000 to Saint John Paul II quasi-parish. Until a parish church is erected, liturgical functions will continue at Frassati Catholic Academy, or another appropriate gathering space desig- nated by the administrator. However, baptisms, weddings, and funerals may also be celebrated at Immaculate Heart of Mary. In accord with the norms of CIC, canons 516, 536 and 537, a pastoral council and finance council shall be constituted in the Saint John Paul II quasi-parish, pursuant to the norms of universal and particular law. Given at the Curia Denveriensis on this 4th day of November 2017, on the Feast of St. Charles Borromeo, Denver, Colorado. DECREE OF ESTABLISHMENT SAINT JOHN PAUL II | DENVER, COLORADO It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives… the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more human and more fraternal." ST. JOHN PAUL II " BY VLADIMIR MAURICIO-PEREZ D iªcult times make great saints out of ordinary life. Such was the case of Karol Jozef Wojtyla, a timid young boy born in Poland, on May 18, 1920. Few could imagine that one day he would become one of the most influential figures of his time. As pope, he would go on to bring about a renewal in the Church and play a key role in the defeat of the Commu- nist regime in Europe. Wojtyla knew su¡ering. By the age of 21, he had lost his immediate family – mother, brother and father. He knew the importance of culture, fighting the Nazi occupation during his college years not by force, but through Polish art. Among his many characteristics, his priestly love for young people was unique. As an ethics professor, he met with a group of students to pray, discuss theological topics and go skiing, kayak- ing and camping. Wojtyla's life would lead him to become "the most intellectually sophis- ticated and pastorally experienced pope in centuries," as George Weigel, his biographer, described him. John Paul II's apostolic zeal drove him to 129 countries during his papacy. His call for a "New evangelization" and his persistence in a message of hope and courage to young people have pro- duced abundant fruits in the Church. His "Theology of the Body" would allow generations to understand the beauty of marriage and sexuality. A "JP II generation" was born – it seeks to live out the fullness of the Chris- tian life in the world, parish and family. St. John Paul, the Great
