Mon., Oct. 30, fire- fighters from Rideau Lakes Station 1 in Delta were called to a house fire on the Plum Hollow Road around 10:30 p.m. The home, an older house of post and beam construction, was vacant and up for sale at the time of the fire. When the emergency was called in the structure was fully involved said Rideau Lakes Fire Chief Jay DeBernardi. No other buildings were in range of the fire but a nearby tree started burning because of the intensity of the fire, and posed a risk of spreading to an adjacent corn field which firefighters sprayed with water. Rideau Lakes crew got mutual aid assistance with a tanker from Elizabeth- town Kitley's Frankville station as well as a pumper and a tanker from Athens' department. Water was ferried to the scene from the Tackaberry quarry on Cty. Rd. 5. The chief said person- nel, which numbered around 24, began to leave the scene around 2:30 a.m. with some Rideau Lakes firefighters on scene until 4:30 or 5:00. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, said DeBernardi. Gord Brown, MP for Leeds-Grenville – Thou- sand Islands and Rideau Lakes, was named to the newly-announced Nation- al Security and Intelli- gence Committee. "I am pleased and hon- oured that the Prime Min- ister chose me as one of the members of this com- mittee," said Brown. "This is an important committee that matches similar com- mittees functioning in the United States and Great Britain." Trudeau announced the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians, a multi- party committee that includes representatives from both the House of Commons and the Senate on Monday. The committee – to be chaired by MP David McGuinty, will have the authority to review nation- al security and intelligence activities across the Gov- ernment of Canada. This includes activities undertaken by the Canadi- an Security Intelligence Service, the Communica- tions Security Establish- ment, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Canada Border Services Agency, amongst many others. The Committee's mandate allows an unprecedented level of review and promotes gov- ernment-wide account- ability. The Committee will provide annual reports on its reviews – including any findings and recommenda- tions. Westport plans to set new arena rates for the 2018-19 season but the proposal brought forward at Monday's regular meet- ing of Council was put over until the Committee of the Whole Nov. 23. The proposal, as it stands, would increase the adult prime rate to $168 an hour, up from $147, an increase of 14 per cent. The youth prime rate would go to $126, up from $118, an increase of close to seven per cent. A survey of surround- ing arenas in Gananoque, Athens, Perth, Smiths Falls, Kingston and Car- leton Place found West- port at the bottom of the range and the new rates would still leave them near the bottom. Adult prime rates at other facilities were $170 in Athens, $182 in Perth, $192 in Smiths Falls, $202 in Gananoque and $320 in Kingston. Youth prime rates at other facilities were $135 in Athens, $120 in Perth, $136 in Smiths Falls, $143 in Gananoque and $241 in Kingston. OPP bill $151,056 for 2018 The Village of Westport got their OPP bill for 2018 at Monday's regular coun- cil meeting, a $151,056 tab, up about two per cent per property from 2017. The annual fee is up 54 per cent in five years. The village paid $126,000 in 2015 and $105,909 in 2014. Part of the fee is based on calls for service although the village hasn't seen an increase in calls. The data supplied at Mon- day's meeting showed calls for service ranging from 154 in 2013, to128 in 2014, 136 in 2015 and 149 in 2016. The last increase was in 2015-16. FOTA Skate-a-thon in February Westport's Friends of the Arena (FOTA) are holding a second annual skate-a-thon Feb. 19, 2018 from 2-4 p.m. Westport Council waived the ice rental fees for the event. FOTA raised over $6,000 in the inaugural event last winter. Asbestos removal to cost $12,105 Westport Council approved a $12,015 tender by Ottawa-based Asbex to remove asbestos from the basement of the Westport Post Office. They did have $10,000 set aside in the 2017 bud- get. Stop signs for Concession Street? Mayor Robin Jones told Westport Council Monday night that she has been receiving numerous com- plaints about speeding along Concession Street between Westport Esso and St. Edward Church. Rideau Street residents with driveways near the intersection have also complained about the speed of vehicles turning from Concession Street. There was a discussion about all-way stops at Spring and Rideau Streets even though stop signs aren't supposed to be for speed control, Mayor Robin Jones said, adding there is a safety aspect to consider. Westport notes Adult arena rates could rise 14 per cent next season Mayor Robin Jones visited the grade 5/6 last week. As part of their Me to We com- mitment, the students must decide on a local case to support. Mayor Jones spoke about the movement as a way of life and encouraged the students to find something they really feel strongly about. After some good discussion and many questions, the students named #ActiveandfuninWestport as their cause for this year. They will be supporting and raising funds for Lockwood Park and Sunday Shinney Hockey. This didn't damper our spirit as we still managed to gut and carve approx. 1,300 pumpkins. We had approximately 150-200 people taking part in the action Saturday, October 28th. After lining the new pathway and lighting all the pumpkins you could see our community's artistic abilities shining. We had everything from a 3 pumpkin snowman, a beautifully carved spider, a puking pumpkin to a two holed one. Hopefully you were able to stroll around the path- way one evening to see for yourself. It was a remark- able sight. The event raised approx. $1,560.00 for Children's Wish Foundation. I would like to thank Cynthia and John Pringle for all their help in making sure this day was a success and to the crew including the helpers from Rideau Vista Public School that showed up to remove the pumpkins Nov. 1.
