Several Legendary Racers To Make History Again in Baja One of the highlights of the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 race, is that several legendary racers will compete to make a historical run. The most prominent are Rod Hall, who will turn 80 on November 22nd. Hall has a record 24 class wins (including one overall win in 1972) and is the only racer who has competed in all 49 SCORE Baja 1000 races. Hall will be racing this year in the Stock Full class where he will split the driving with his son Chad Hall. Larry Roeseler, who needs no introduction, has won the SCORE Baja 1000 13 times total; his first in 1976. Roeseler will be competing in the Trophy Truck Legends class. Bobby Ferro at age 70, began racing in Baja in 1973 and became a Baja champion in his Sandmaster buggy in the mid to late ’70’s. He will again re-appear at the race as a co-driver for Bob Lawrence in the special Vintage-Trailblazer class. Dr. Bud Feldkamp, 73 of Redlands, California, is another Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee who raced with Malcolm Smith and won numerous off-road races. Feldkamp will also be competing as a co-driver for the team led by his son Buddy Feldkamp in the special Vintage-Innovator class. Mark Stahl (1978 and 1980), is 66 years old and comes from Palmdale, California. Stahl was the first to Ironman the Baja 1000 and also raced in the NASCAR Cup Series. Stahl will be a co-driver for a team led by John Leon in the Baja Challenge class for spec Subaru-powered open wheel Baja Touring Cars. Two Women Attempt To Ironman The 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 Kristen Matlock and Jessi Combs are two women who will be competing in the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 and will attempt to drive the entire 1,134.40-mile course solo (Ironman). Matlock had previously accomplished this feat at the 2016 SCORE Baja 1000, finishing in second place in the Pro UTV class, becoming the first woman to ever solo the entire SCORE Baja 1000 from behind the wheel of a four-wheel vehicle. Matlock will again be competing in the Pro UTV Naturally Aspirated class where she is currently second in points in chasing the championship for that class. “I’m super anxious...not because I doubt my ability, but because I’m just so excited to prove my capability to myself,” said Matlock. “There’s nothing more that I want right now than to get to La Paz and cross the finish line. Being in first place [in class] would just be the icing on the cake!” Combs is an automotive fabricator and TV show personality, most widely known for her appearance as host and co-host of shows such as X-Treme 4x4, Overhaulin’, Myth Busters, All Girls Garage, and others. Combs will be driving a Trophy Truck after raising more than $80,000. “I am going to drive all 1200-ish miles down the Baja peninsula to La Paz,” said Combs. “Last year Kristen Matlock completed in a UTV as the first ‘ironwoman.’ We know of no other woman who has ever attempted this feat, nonetheless drive the full +1000 miles point to point solo... in all 50 years of the event’s history.” VW Bug into the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 Race VW’s official entry into the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 is a factory-sponsored privateer team led by an industrial designer named Josh McGuckin out of Denver, Colorado. The 1970 VW Beetle will run in Class 11, (stock class), and will be driven by co-drivers Matt Wilson, Matt Fisher, Evan Chute, Nick Wilson and Emme Hall, Reviews Editor at CNET Roadshow. VW explains that the ’70 Beetle received a heavy-duty rear torsion bar adjuster, while the dampers were replaced with external reservoir Fox units, stiffer springs were fitted, and the stock gas tank was replaced by 22-gallon safety cell. The tires used on the VW are 235/75R-15s BFG All Terrains; the rear trailing arms were reinforced, and skid plates were added for protection at the front and rear. All of the glass and upholstery were removed, communications and navigation equipment were added, and the stock seats replaced by racing buckets, with full harnesses. Dust 2 Glory documentary to open in theaters December 6th The Dust 2 Glory movie, directed by Dana Brown, will premiere in cinemas December 6th. The movie is the culmination of an 18-month project that started at the 2016 SCORE Baja 1000 and follows various racers in different classes, as they prepare for the 50th Anniversary of the SCORE Baja 1000. The documentary includes exclusive interviews, dramatic cinematography and the beautiful Baja landscape that racers fall in love with, but also find challenging to conquer.
