gIS San Diego Survival guide By Symone Kennedy The Golf Industry Show is coming to beautiful San diego, calif., on February 6–7, 2013, making San diego the place to be for golf industry professionals. The San diego convention center is sure to be packed with industry profes- sionals taking advantage of the amaz- ing opportunities provided by the GIS. But you won't always be at the con- vention center. You have to leave at some point, if only to get something to eat. So for those who are unfamiliar with the San diego area, we have cre- ated a list of top places to go and some tips and tricks for getting the most out of your visit to the city. San diego boasts over 90 golf courses and is hailed by Golf digest as "one of the top 50 golf destinations in the world." Balboa Park Golf Course is one of the top courses in the area and is conveniently located about three miles from the San diego convention center. It has both an 18-hole cham- pionship course and a 9-hole executive course for players who only have a short time to spare. The San diego Golf Pages calls Balboa Park "a devilish little course." Its deceptively short yardage makes the course look easier than it actu- ally is. The Golf Pages goes on to say, "Perhaps it's the perfect example of when the uSGa slope/rating system, seemingly based mostly on distance, fails to capture the true difficulty of a golf course." Between the course's unique layout (complete with undulat- ing fairways and canyon drop-offs) and the stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the San diego skyline vis- ible throughout the course, it is easy to see why Balboa Park Golf course is considered one of the best. as long as you're in Balboa Park, check out the other attractions it offers. The park boasts 17 muse- ums (including the San diego air and Space Museum and the San diego natural History Museum), 9 per- forming arts cen- ters, 19 gardens, the San diego Zoo, plus restau- rants, walking paths and other amusement and recreational opportu- nities. also near the convention center is the historic Gaslamp Quarter. Here, the present meets the past as Victorian- era buildings and modern skyscrapers stand side by side, housing more than 100 of San diego's finest restaurants, pubs, nightclubs and retail shops. The Gaslamp Quarter also contains the- atres, art galleries, symphony halls, concert venues and museums. and when your feet get tired, consider hir- ing one of the taxis or pedicabs that can easily be found throughout the Gaslamp Quarter.
